This is coming from a government that claims its fighting corruption. What the minister said is based on the amount being budgeted by the federal government but we know what the real figure is. So who is the balance with 1 Like |

Yemidaniels: This government is full of clowns. I am wondering, how we got this low. The president does not read his budget, yet presents to NASS!!! EFCC do not investigate before going to the press!!! Now a minister is saying this trash. Either he is confused, misquoted or just went to press as usual without verifying facts. Now check this: There are 365 days in a Calendar year. If actually you feed prisoners 3 times a day, that translates to 1095 meals per prisoner. If you have 57000 prisoners, that amounts to 62,450,000 meals in a year. Therefore if you budgeted N10 Billion, you are actually spending N480.65 per day or N160.22 per meal. This minister deserves to be sacked immediately, politic aside!!! |

Officially, government is spending N14,000 per prisoner per day while the prisoners probably get just N140 or even less. The balance goes to someone's private bank account. 2 Likes |

I think what Nigerians cannot accept is outright misinformation. How can a news medium that worth its name distort an innocent statement made by the Honourable Minister of Interior? For the records, the Minister said the Federal Government requires N10 billion every year to feed about 70, 000 Prisoners who are mostly on awaiting trial list. Hence, the point he was making was on the need to privatise it so that it will be managed by the private sector so as to reduce cost on government. You get the exact word of the Minister here http://leadership.ng/news/525426/fg-introduce-biometric-identification-tackle-smuggling-arms-drugs-danbazzau Finally, I appeal to the managers of Nairaland to checkmate outright disinformation because they can claim to love Nigeria when they allowed the majority to be misinformed. |

Can one say voting this present regime is like 'Missing Road' for us in Nigeria............ N14,000.00 for feeding a prisoner that will still look haggard when released? Minimum wage as at present is N18,000 that is 2-day meal ticket less for a Prisoner in Nigeria (Shows how Nigerian Workers are treated by the 'Masses-oriented' government I don't think this IS true/coming from a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Maybe, what he meant was this: N14000 which translates to N140.00 per day Haba, N14,000. Outright misinformation |

Sometimes you wonder who is more gullible; the one that misinforms or the one that accepts every news without checking the facts. If government requires N10b ANNUALLY to feed 57,000 inmates, a simple mathematics shows that that's equivalent to N480 per day N160 per meal. |
Re: Nigeria Spends N14,000 Daily To Feed Each Prisoner- Minister by egopersonified(f): 12:52pm On May 11, 2016 |
If so, how about privatizing the prison system and pay the private company 14k per day for each prisoner? All the govt would do is pay salaries of military men and prison officials. While the private company takes care of feeding, clothing, housing, maintenance, exercise, health, etc of every prisoner. |

RE: NIGERIA SPENDS N14, 000 DAILY TO FEED PRISONERS The news credited to the Honourable Minister of Interior Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau as saying Nigeria spends N14, 000 daily to feed each prisoner is the height of mischief, news distortion and misinformation which no news platform that worth its name can let go without punishing whoever is responsible for such a spurious story. That the Minister has suffered alot of mud-slinging as a result of sensational reporting by 'Yellow Journalists' is an understatement, but the worrisome part is the ferocious dimension such an ungodly adventure has taken lately. At a Town Hall Meeting held in Kaduna State, The Minister of Interior, General AB Dambazau among other things said, Nigeria requires about N10 billion annually to feed Prisoners across the country. His words: ''Our Prisons are congested with close to 70, 000 prison inmates and awaiting trials. Quiet a number of them are there because they cannot their fines.'' Besides the Minister wants to reduce our prison congestion by 60 percent. This he has done by warning the police officials not to arrest people indiscreminatly again. |

Besides the Minister wants to reduce our prison congestion by 60 percent. This he has done by warning the police officials not to arrest people indiscreminatly again. Since the writer of such a mischievous story has shown that he does not understand simple arithmetic let alone getting his facts together before going public, I have decided to educate him a little on the subject matter. In last year's budget, the sum of N450 was appropriated for each prison inmate per day; this includes N150 for gas! And there are 65, 000 inmates nationwide. Now, if you multiply N450 by 65, 000 you will get N29, 250, 000 as the total amount consumed by prisoners everyday. So, to get the yearly cost, you multiply N29, 250, 000 by 365 which is the number of days we have in a year. Now, if you do this, you will get N10, 676, 250, 000 being the annual amount spent on prisoners. The Minister also said that government cannot sustain this huge amount spent on feeding prisoners alone. Hence, the Ministry is looking at other options such as the reviving of the moribund prison farms which he ordered their reopening last year! |
