Boilers are expensive to replace and repair, hence it’s mandatory to get them serviced regularly. Many homeowners shut down the boiler once winter is over and turn it on again the next year when winter arrives. Not getting it serviced for a long period of time can cause it to perform poorly during the peak season. Regular maintenance is the key to get your boilers running smoothly throughout the winter season.
Here are some maintenance tips that can help you make sure the boiler remains in top condition all year round:
1. Yearly service
Annual service is extremely important. Also, ensure that you only have an experienced professional technician service the equipment. The professional will be able to give the equipment a thorough and clear its various parts. He or she will be able to identify any issues and recommend a solution.
2. Run it frequently
A good idea is to run the boiler frequently. It is safe to run it for 15-20 minutes every week in order to keep its components from going rusty. Carry on this routine during the entire summer so when you really need to run it in winters, it doesn’t give you trouble.
3. Check pressure
The gas pressure in the boiler can run low over time which can cause it to underperform. It is important to check the gas pressure often you can take appropriate measures accordingly. It is best to top it up with gas if the pressure is too low. While you can DIY, it is a good idea to call a plumber or a boiler installation company who can send a pro to do the job for you.
4. Bleeding radiators
If your radiators have air trapped in them, it will halt the system from performing efficiently. Release the trapped air by “bleeding the radiators”. If the air stays trapped inside, it will prevent the system from working properly and will put a lot of pressure on the boiler too, causing the energy bill to go up.
5. Red Signals
Pay attention to any unfamiliar, odd noises, marks, etc. from the boiler. They suggest something needs to be fixed. Looking out for red signals can help you identify any possible problems with the equipment; you can then get timely repair.
6. Ventilation
If your heating equipment is in a closed, compact area, make sure to keep it free of clutter. The equipment needs a lot of ventilation to work in its optimal condition.
7. Carbon monoxide detector
A defective boiler emits carbon dioxide which is extremely hazardous for the environment. It can be toxic for humans and animals. A carbon monoxide detector is an essential thing for every home because it can easily detect the levels of this particular gas. In case it is out of a safe range, it will make the safety alarm go off. This detector is ever so important because the gas is colorless and odorless, hence easily goes undetectable.
The above mentioned are important to be aware of for adequate boiler maintenance. Make sure you hire a professional technician who can provide the right maintenance service the first time around.
