Labour's Strike Ineffective In Kano by Emmatdayo(m): 1:14pm On May 18, 2016
The nationwide strike embarked upon by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has proved to be ineffective in Kano state on Wednesday as workers defied the strike by reporting to their respective offices, Daily Trust observed.

Our reporter, who went round the state metropolis, also observed that markets, universities, banks, shopping malls and other public places did not comply with the NLC strike.

At Audu Bako State Secretariat, where majority of state ministries are located, workers were seen conducting their usual office work in their respective offices.

Aliyu Ahmed, a civil servant told Daily Trust that he reported to his duty post because a federal high court had ordered the labour unions to suspend the strike.

He said: “Nobody told me to stay at home because of the strike. So, I assumed that the strike has been suspended and when I reported to my office, I saw many people working as usual. So, I have no reason whatsoever not to report to my place of work.”

Also at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital both Doctors and other supportive staff also reported to their offices.

Students at Bayero University Kano (BUK) also attended classes as lecturers in the university defied the strike though the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) is supposed to be part of the strike.

At the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA), the strike did not make any impact as government officials reported to their various offices.

It was further observed that both public and private schools operated in the state despite the strike.
