No Better Time To Diversify Nigerian Economy Than Now – Buhari by mediang: 10:51pm On May 25, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said that there was no better time to diversify the Nigerian economy than now.

Buhari said this at the 56th Annual General Meeting and Conference of Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) in Dutse.

Represented by Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr Okechukwu Enelamah, the President said his administration was determined to ensure the long-overdue fundamental restructuring of the Nigerian economy.

He said that Nigeria had depended on oil and gas which accounted for more than 75 per cent of government’s revenue for so long.

The President said that with the current dwindling prices of oil, the needed reform to diversify the country’s economy must be carried out.

Buhari said that with the current challenge, the country must harness its natural resources like agriculture and solid minerals to survive, being a country blessed with arable land, endless swathes of grasslands and forest.

He said that these natural resources produced more yam, cassava, cashew nut, shea nuts and kola nuts than the rest of the world.

Buhari said that Nigeria was equally blessed with solid mineral resources, stressing that not less than 44 mineral resources were available in commercial quantities across the country.

The President said that it was disheartening that every year Nigeria spent more than three billion dollars to import steel despite the fact that the country had enough iron ore.

He said that his government would create environment that would enable private sector to partner the government to implement the Nigerian Industrial Revolution Plan.

Diversification of Nigerian Economy

The over dependence on revenues from crude products has been identified as one major factor responsible for the present economic hardship facing Nigeria. To this end, President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated his administration's determination to diversify the economy with a bid to open up other sources of revenue especially Agriculture, mines and solid minerals

The fact is every president right from the time of OBJ to present, said that phrase "diversify the economy" without put initiatives in place to do so.
Oil money will soon start rolling in now, they will loose their agenda and focus.

Diversify everyday and what are they doing to diversify.. we ve been hearing this for long oh. Ordinary tomatoes disease killed all the tomatoes in the country and yet we get agro research institute and they cant tackle the spreading. So na those lazy ppl go help us diversify?

Do we really need government to diversify our economy??
Emeka is complaining of tomatoes scarcity but is building a 58 room hotel in owerri
Tunde is complaining of garri price but just completed his eatery
Hasan saying the economy is hard is building an estate in Abuja
This is Nigeria mentality, as big as Port Harcourt is to u know that there is no quality polythene producing company in Port Harcourt? ?
Do u know we import stroll?? While setting up the company won't cost 50 million? ?
Do u know 50 million can set up a quality shoe company in aba??
Do u know we import peanut burger from Ghana? ? And 20 million will set up a rival company??
Do u know 20 million can set up a 10 ton per day garri plant? ?
. No keep waiting for government una never see anything

For me I know it just a matter of time before I start investing( don't laugh at me am young and broke for now) we will get there
Go out and create job brothers

Oya na, don't just talk it, work it. The next best industry we could diversify to is Agriculture yet that sector is spinning out of control. While The Minister wants to import grass to feed cattle @N1billion, pests are ravaging crops and yet government plans to hands off fertilizer distribution which would further shoot up the price.
These guys need to have a stern but sincere word with themselves.

Adequate power supply holds the key to any planned diversification. Get that right and watch the economy go on self diversification.

Wow!
So Jonathan did nothing to the agricultural sector in Nigeria.
And please, don't give a response based on who you wanted in power.
It is undeniable that Jonathan revived the agricultural sector.
Even Obasanjo that no one seems to speak well of has a huge farm. At least it's something.
