The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed that western education was not against Islam in any way but complimenting it. This observation was made by the Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Education, Mr. Adesina Odeyemi during a lecture to commemorate the Children’s Day celebration held recently at the Alausa Secretariat Mosque in Ikeja. According to him, Western education is a blessing that has not only brought civilisation but also made life a lot easier for people.
“Western education in form of science and technology has revolutionised the world in the area of communication, transportation, petroleum, engineering and the whole world including the Arab countries are benefitting from the development today. While explaining that what is not in tandem with Islam are some western ways of life which are not in agreement with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Hadith, he listed cultism, kidnapping, rape, drug abuse, child abuse, homosexualism, sexual harassment, robbery as parts of the contradiction.
He therefore charged parents and clerics not to join the people who always ascribe moral decadence in the society to western education which is responsible for keeping many Muslim children out of the school system, saying the development is dangerous.
Our children can grow in pursuit of “Western education for their development as future leaders without losing their dignity as Muslims,” he stressed. Also speaking, the guest lecturer at the event, Ustaz Sidiq Uthman Okanlawon, who spoke on the “Impact of Western Education on the development of Islam: Focus on the Muslim youths” frowned at the curriculum that does not give priority to the teaching of religion, saying that children who are bred under such condition cannot have the fear of God and that is one of the major problems facing the country.
He enjoined Muslims especially the youths to focus more on Islamic.
