Children are still the prime victims of war, violence, poverty and natural disasters. Regrettably, children are among the victims of the insurgency in the northern parts of Nigeria where 219 girls preparing to write their examinations were kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists. Thankfully, two of them have been found and reunited with their families and given the commitment of our armed forces, we are hopeful the rest will be rescued from captivity. A worrisome trend emerging in our nation is child marriage and sexual abuse. Children are not physically, emotionally and psychologically ready for marriage. They are still in the formative stage of life. Even when a girl attained puberty and gets pregnant, she is still under severe risk of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) or Recto Vaginal Fistula (RVF) because of the smallness of her pelvis. This is not casting aspersion on any religion or culture, but purely a matter of common sense a decency. Even when a child by custom is betrothed, she should be allowed to continue her development in biology, education and in society. In the olden days when women marry early, it was within a social context in which there was sufficient social, economic and moral support. For most part, the bride would be under the tutelage and mentorship of the older wives or her mother-in-law and the marriage was never consummated until she attained maturity. -Excerpts of the Speech of the Osun governor, Rauf Aregbesola on the occasion of Children’s Day, 2016. The speech was read by his deputy, Otunba Titi LaoyeTomori today in Osogbo.

Aregbe has forgotten that Children are also the victim of unpaid salary.
