FollowingSaturday PUNCHreport of Saturday, May 21, 2016 the three police officers who were fingered in the alleged murder of one Nonso Uchenwoke of Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State have been arrested and detained.
The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hosea Karma disclosed this while taking questions from journalists in his office at Amawbia.
He said, “This is a belated story. Punch had reported it and thereafter, the three police officers, including the lady police officer involved, had been arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The DPO and DCO in charge of the division had been removed to allow free flow of investigation.”

The Civil Liberties Organisation and a family source of the deceased had said, “When we went to the police station to see the DPO, the police culprits were busy drinking beer at a joint near the station, contrary to what the DPO told us that they had been arrested and detained.”
Karma maintained that if the police officers were found guilty, they must be made to face the law.
”We are not going to shield anybody. Any police officer, who through his conduct, violates the law or veers off from his professional training, should be prepared to face the law.”
He condemned the action of the police officers for insisting on arresting the deceased at 9pm in a simple assault case.
“No law says you must not fail to arrest an offender. The policemen should have retreated when the victim resisted arrest because by insisting on arresting the victim that night, the officers put themselves at risk too.
“They would have been victims, themselves, had the relations of the deceased fought back.”
He said the command had concluded arrangements to conduct an autopsy on the deceased, adding that the parties in the matter would be free to bring in their independent doctors to observe the postmortem.
Karma warned police officers against being overzealous and taking the laws into their hands.
“Any police officer who violates the law should be prepared to face the music. We won’t protect such character,” Karma maintained.
Asked what could be the cause of the fracas between the police officers and the deceased, Karma said “Only the police lady and the deceased would be able to answer this question.”
“What we gathered was that the two had lived in the same compound for a long time”, the police boss said.
The CLO in the state has said it would ensure that justice was done in the alleged murder of Nonso Uchenwoke by the Okpoko policemen.
The Legal Secretary of the human rights group, Mr. Justice Ijeoma, stated this in a press briefing in Awka, the state capital.
He said, “The Anambra State Police Command wants to play game with the alleged murder of the 40-year-old man.”
