Celestine Ihejirika, Jalingo - 22.08.2009

The country director, IPAS in Nigeria, Dr. Ejike Oji, said about 80,000 Nigerian women have been saved from dying in complications of abortion related cases within the past five years.

He also said over 34,000 out of 59,000 die every year from complications of abortion and pregnancy related problems.

Dr. Oji, who disclosed this in an interview with Saturday Tribune shortly after a workshop organised on Thursday in the state said at present, IPAS had introduced programmes in about 19 states of the federation and plans are under way to reach other states for similar programmes.

According to him, the organisation, which is an NGO, has also taken charge of training about 202 journalists in the reproductive health and rights issues within the past four years.

He said that the measure would go a long way in sensitizsing the public on the plights of women.

The director, who lauded government support to IPAS, said his NGO recently signed a bilateral agreement with the government as measures to compliment its efforts, pointing out that the organisation depended solely on intervention from the state Ministry of Health to achieve most of its objectives.

He, however, listed some of their major challenges to include unnecessary criticism of post abortion, politicisation of reproductive health issues and limited resources to carry out the programmes and implementation effectively.

These are the women that have chosen to sacrifice their lives to curb population explosion in Nigeria. Why are they stopping them. For an estimate of 34,000 women dead from abortion, consider the lives of the babies they aborted. Altogether, about 70,000 being reduced from our population annually. That's not a bad thing, that is something that the Government can even put as one of its achievements in population control.

This group should stop going all over the place trying to save the lives of serial abortionists. They are evil. They are not needed in our society. Anybody that can kill an innocent child who has not even been born. Think of how easily such a person can kill an adult that cannot be absolved of all blame.

I personally believe that anyone engaging in abortion for simple convenience should face the death sentence but if they are dying during the process of the abortion itself, I have no problem with that.

I have to mention here that I am not against abortions carried out in critical cases threatening the lives of mothers.

eye fo an eye, life for a life.

if you dont want the kids then keep you legs shut. if you were raped then get a morning after pill from the state hosital. will prevent pregncy if taken within 48 hours of sex

Wtf are you guys ok?,

As in some babes could have been raped,  while some fetuses have birth defects and are advised by the doctor to abort, others etc,

Doesn't suprise me how all you people are sha, 700 people died in a week, everyone was living like it was in another country. If it were in US or England/ any civilised country, the whole country would be in mourning.

seeing all the post on here reminds me of how thoughtless and insensitive nigerians are real talk.

Naija can never change with that selfish mentality

All of the abortions that cause death are carried out by non-professionals because they are illegal because there is no reason for it.

do you have any idea how many women in the us and england die every year from abortion ?  how many abortion clinics are bombed every year in developed nations?  ever notice how abortion comes up in every election and how the catholic church has said for the last 400 years that abortions are a sin?  there are medications available from the red cross (yes here in Nigeria) that will prevent pregnancy when taked after rape.  as far as babies with birth defects how much of that is because the babay actualy has a problem that will cuse dificulties in the child like missing limbs and how much is the parents being selfish and not wanting to be burdend by a baby with a problem like down syndrome/cp/md/scoliosis and the like?

hmm the same clinics that give faulty HIV test and the same ones that transmitted aids through blood transfusions.
Lol  you're not serious and that is why Nigerians die of abortions which is a simple thing.
Clinics being bombed in America isn't common so lets stop that nonsense. every year you say is a joke
Catholics are against abortion for religious reasons, one cant govern a country and base everything on religion. They will never have laws against abortion because its ones personal choice.

Wise up if you dont like abortions dont get one but you can't stop someone else, its their personal choice.

Out of all the responses I've ever read, you're d 1st person who reasons differently, u surely live abroad n how I wish nigerians can be well informed.
They're not to blame, Nigerian govt only care abt themselves,  even the worst illiterate in developed countries knows a bit of everything, ectopic pregnancy (foetus forming outside the womb) threatens a womans life and can be seen as soon as it is formed 'cos the woman involved will be ill or show symptoms related to such defect.

But the fact remain that most of those who opt for abortion are not those with pregnancy related problem(s), they are simply assasins who murder those helpless creatures knowig their cry for help'll not be heard by anyone, not even by the heartless manslaughter (doctor performing the act/hired clifford orji) but the truth is that those unborn babies scream,  silently,  To know if and how those poor things scream, check out the video entitled; THE SILENT SCREAM  part 1 and 2 in www.youtube.com

being a democrat, I've always been pro choice. Even now I still am. But when you say somebody has the right to make their own personal decision, are you talking about the child?

a)the cdc states that .6%-1% of women performing clinical abortions in the US die from complications. there is no statistic available for "back alley" clinics or home abortions (herbs, medications, coat hangers)
b) roe vs wade did NOT provide absolute rights to abortion, the government still has the right to limit when a woman can have an abortion and there are currently laws in congress (state and federal) that are intended to revoke or limit those said "rights"
c) i said the red cross not a clinic. the red cross is not run by nigerian doctors but foriegn doctors most from europe.
d) the morning after pill is nothing more then a high dose birth control pill. going to the local pharmacy and getting a pack of birth control pills and taking 5-7 at once will have the same effect. beside that face any girl of child bearing age who doesnt want to get pregnant should take birth control pills as a precausion.
e) many countries uses religious doctrin to influence its laws. are you forgeting that muslim law rules in northern nigeria?

This women that goes around aborting and killing innocent children that never ask to be born before their time is due are inevitably Heartless, Bold and preposterous. They early never had the thoughts of getting pregnant before ignorantly separating their legs for pleasure to play it role in sexual immorality. Now they are pregnant, they are shy of walking around province with big belly to avoid being mocked. They go for abortion regardless of the risk involve, their prospect is to live and kill the baby but unfortunately for them, not all have the chance to survive. Fate catches up with them, yet many are ignorant of this fact as they still carryout the act that brought about the cause of an abortion. I don’t see any means on how we can ease this abortion something by enforcing any kind of body to go round hospitals to inspect doctors and nurses who carry out abortion for their clients. Yes, let us not also forget that many of the ladies who go for abortion are affronted, violated and rapped by some heartless road side thug and which they get pregnant. You know several things will run in her minds like, what kind of a baby do I have in my womb? A rapist? How can I give birth to a child that I don’t know what he or she will turn out to be? It is crazy and absurd to see such insanity. But despite that, abortion shouldn’t be an option, it is better the baby dies during birth then it is certain that the child is never for you than for you to abort. It makes you a murderer. You can imagine the vast number of woman that dead in abortion.
The only way I know it can be control is by organizing a forum for youth male and his opposite sex and educate them on things they really need to know about why they should exit such preposterous things such as sexual immorality, intimate relationship and pornography. If the youth can be well educated in this three aspect, abortion will be eased.

Since our moral cape crusaders are appalled by the statistics of 34,000 women dieing every year from abortion in Nigeria, why don't they reel out the number of children that die from simple presentable diseases like Malaria. What of the number of deaths from typhoid due to lack of clean drinking water. Then they should remember the number of deaths from road accidents on our expressways. They must also not forget deaths due to malnutrition.

They can then then compare all these statistics so we can see which problems are the most appalling so that we can situate the abortion statistics devoid of religious and moral colourations.

Sorry, I forgot to add the number of forced abortions of actual babies and not feotuses (including even aborting the mother), as a result of the poor medicare in Nigeria. I am sure the statistics would be more appalling than the Abortion figures presented - Just ask WHO.
