Ever since he was head of state, former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s response to music and its prophets has been alarming. The sounds of drums, acoustics, keys and other musical instruments seems to bother him a lot. One could justify his actions because the particular kinds of music played then were quite scary. Fela Anipulapo Kuti would pray to some ancestral beings before rehearsals or starting a show. The presence of a place called shrine with bunch of backup singers echoing the name Obasanjo while the almost naked Fela tackled the present government at the time dangling his enormous manhood while performing was such a scary scene. On February 18, 1977, Fela’s musical country, Kalakuta republic was raided by about 1,000 soildiers allegedly sent by Obasanjo. During this incident, Fela’s mother was murdered and this day remains a day of remembrance for the Kalakuta republicans. Obasanjo after this incident must have felt a sign of relief from the haunting voices of music and would once again put a smile on his face.

Obasanjo instituted the Oputa panel in his first tenure as a democratic president. Among the cases revisited was the Kalakuta incidence and Obasanjo was to give replies to Fela Kuti’s petitions. He was again to face the music and this time in a rap battle. He never listened to 2pac and Biggie Smalls so he had no idea of how it was going to be. The vibrant lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) speaking on behalf of Fela gave series of jabs, punchlines, ciphers and calculated puns that even his own son Falz might never equate. Obasanjo was overwhelmed with the music and some would say he ran away from the battle scene.

Evidently, Obasanjo was tired of the music, the musicians and their instruments as he sent some musicians to the place where the songs of freedom are sung. He sent them to prison. He thought all the views and tunes were over as he sits with mercy the Chimpanzee at Ota farm explaining to her how he detest the music while enjoying the serene environment. To his dismay, Mercy the Chimpanzee started dancing vigorously and Obasanjo wondered what has come over her. Only to move a step closer to see a young man on TV shouting “Nigeria jagajaga”. This infuriated him and he silenced Eedris abdulkareem immediately. Eedris who just started singing conscious songs after the episodes of the song Mr Lecturer that exposes the wrought of sexual immoralities happening in Nigerian schools gave him lots of attention in the music world. He was at his peak as he diverted this energy to his new song jagajaga. Till today, Eedris has not been able to recover his career as he releases failed hits back to back. Little did he know that would be his last hit song. In Obasanjo’s words “How could a young man call his own country jagajaga? It is the height of blasphemy”.

Few weeks ago, Obasanjo gave out mercy the Chimpazee who unfaithfully rocked the rhythm of Eedris’ music. This confirms Obasanjo might never face the music as Buhari’s Fulani corruption gongs and local horns would never echo to his administration. Obasanjo remains a hero as he fought facing the music and won with a landslide. Maybe in his after life as the white man’s religion predicts, he might face the music. But for now, would former President Olusegun Obasanjo ever face the music?

smiley When Obasanjo hears the four by four kicks of the afro beats pounding in his heart, it is like the snares of life has come upon him and he destroys the musician with his sticks. smiley
