From your line of argument it might be absurd really!!! Because they have a more efficient (heart) cardiovascular system than non athletes (in theory)...but you can't rule out other genetic, environmental, socio-psychological and lifestyle factors. From the history, he may have been even reluctant in seeking healthcare. Most elite athletes behave like that...
