UNN Students Riot Continues. by TheLegal(m): 2:59pm On Jun 14, 2016
By Chinedu Adonu ENUGU— Angry students of University of Nigeria Nsukka, UNN, Enugu Campus have shut down the school. Lectures were not holding for about one week and the non-academic staff were not allowed to work in their offices. The angry students were demonstrating against poor academic environment. The students, who turned out in their numbers at the campus gate to protest poor academic environment, yesterday, would not allow the staff to move in or out as security officers lock ed the gate. The students, it was learned, had not had steady power supply for three months and had relied on generator and intermittent power supply from EEDC. Apart from epileptic power supply or lack of it, the students complained that their hostels stank because they lacked water and they buy a bucket for N30.00. The students who spoke to Vanguard, equally lamented that they lacked enough accommodation as too many students were pitched in a room and they slept on mattresses long overdue for change. They equally paid for Wi fi services but they were not enjoying it. Overwhelmed by these grievances, the protesting students carried placards that read: 'How can we save lives without light, light is our right, no light no lectures.' Speaking with Vanguard, the students said that, "Life has not been easy .Our mattresses are bad. We are too many in a room. "We paid for Wi fi, but we are not enjoying it,” they pointed out in unison. "We are demonstrating against the school management. We don’t want any movement in the school," the angry students declared as they blocked the entrance, chanting songs. The public relations officer of the university, Mr. Gabriel Onah, in a telephone interview, said he was at a meeting at the time of filing this report and would react afterwards on the issue. However, a lecturer, who refused to disclose his name, told Vanguard that the students were doing the right thing. “The students are right. The school management is not helping matters. They will not listen. Now for one week, there have been no lectures,” he said.
