AN APPRAISAL OF OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY IN THE NIGERIAN INDUSTRIAL SECTOR
ABSTRACT
According to a report on the International Labour Organisation website, as at June 2016, every day an average of 6,300 deaths occur as a result of occupational accidents and work-induced diseases. Due to paucity of records and reports, it is difficult to paint the actual picture on the state of occupational safety in Nigeria. The dearth of such records does however imply that the practice of occupational or industrial in the Nigerian industrial leaves much to be deserved.
The purpose of this project is to understudy the legal regime governing occupational or work safety in Nigeria. The Factories Act is the main piece of legislation in this regard and will therefore be analysed as it relates to the efficacy of occupational safety measures in Nigeria’s volatile labour market.
Chapter One is the introductory chapter which lays the foundation for the entire research piece, providing historical antecedents and various concepts that underpin industrial safety.
In Chapter Two the fundamental complementary obligations of both employees and employers are expounded upon.
Chapter Three delves into some International Conventions, Treaties and Legislations in a bid to mirror the state of Nigeria’s labour standards against the backdrop of international labour standards on industrial safety.
Chapter Four sums up various significant provisions of the Nigerian Factories Act that are germane to the enjoyment of safety in the workplace, including provisions on Health, Welfare etc.
Chapter Five has to do with conclusion and recommendations

Occupational safety will remain a viable issue, as long as there are occupations for which safety is required. So law students ought to consider this topic.
