The federal government of Nigeria made it compulsory that every graduate from a tertiary institution must serve his Father Land as long as he or she is within a specified age bracket.
The whole idea of the NYSC scheme was to bring youths of different ethnic groups together in other to learn and respect each other’s cultures and values. This is very encouraging and recommendable. Also, the NYSC scheme was also to provide a Place of Primary Assignment for the youths where they would serve their father land in their capacity.

But it is unfortunate that our government cannot provide a place for the youths to serve. Every year we see youths roam the street in their NYSC uniform looking for a place to serve with most firms including government parastatals rejecting them. It is a shame that the same government that compelled the youths to serve are also rejecting their services.

It is very frustrating with the rumor that over a million was budgeted per corps member. Now why are the youths not feeling expensive?

In camps, corps members were told that no organization, especially government parastatal had the right to reject their services. That in fact, they were helping such organization out as they constituted cheap labor for such an organization. But it’s one thing to ‘talk the talk’ but can the federal government ‘walk the walk’? The answer is glaring; with thousands, if not millions of youths still roaming the streets in their uniform searching for a place to apply their skills and put into practice what they learnt in school.

Most youths that can compromised are being posted and taken in local primary and secondary schools with poor living conditions. While others that have jobs in their field of study must be very connected and know someone in such firm to pull strings for them to get it.

So the questions remain: is this NYSC worth it?
Is it a scheme or scam?
And is it by force if you can’t provide?
