THE “ONIONS” LAW. PARTY or CANDIDATE who do we vote for ?
I have always said Nigeria’s Electoral act / constitution needs to be reviewed to discourage some shortcoming(s) most notably, the rate at which our shameless Politicians jump from one party to another. My question is: What or who do we really vote for, is it the Party’s manifest or the candidate(s) contesting.
i) If we are voting for the candidate it simply means once a candidate for any reason is disqualified or withdrawn after he has assumed office, then the contestant from the party that came second will automatically be the choice.
ii) Then if we say we are voting for the party, it implies that any Elected politician(s) who defects to another party will instantly relinquish his position (resign from the office he attained via the given Party) because at this point he is not expected to work to fulfill his old party’s Manifesto (which was actually what the masses voted) but rather that of his new party.
Using the recent Abia state governorship drama for illustration, if the masses voted for person (Gov ikpeazu) and for any of his reason(s) the Oga of a guy who nobody saw his name after primaries helps disqualify him then INEC’s Certificate of return should be given to the aspirant from the Party that came second (APGA) in the general election but if the masses voted for party then RT Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi etc. who assumed office on PDP’s back but later defected to APC ought to automatically loose their seat.
What do you think
