A 39-year-old man in Kajiado county, Parkuyare Ole Mutua, was arrested for marrying a 9-year-old girl who is in class one.

According to The Star, the girl was married off to the man by her father, Kamuyan Ole Tiyan, who was also arrested alongside the ‘husband’.

A pastor who is also an activist against female genital mutilation had visited the couple, pretending to look for lost goats. After getting his facts right, he then alerted officials who stormed and rescued the minor.
The girl was then rescued and rushed to Nairobi Women’s Hospital after she was found with severe injuries in her private parts. She was said to have been raped severely. Despite that she was circumcised then married off after her dowry of four cows was paid off.

The chiefs in the area have been urged to help fight against early marriages which are propagated by poverty. Parents are enticed to marry off their girls in exchange for cows valued highly in the community.
