Airport Concession: Arik Blackmails The Government by busybody20: 7:40pm On Sep 18, 2009
The story goes like this:
Arik Airline was in a race to obtain Federal Government concession to develop the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) located at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, (MMIA). The problem was; it has already been concessioned to a rival company since 2004 but Federal Government was in breach of the contract by not handing over the terminal. The concessioner has now obtained a court injunction to force the Government to honour the contract. Government has decided to honour it. Arik air feeling out-manoeuvred is now encouraging the government to disobey the courts or else they will stop operating. There rationale is that since they control 50% of the local passenger traffic, it is the passengers that will suffer so government should act now to prevent the suffering.

It is very funny that Arik are making statements like they are a charity and will not be the ultimate loser by stopping operations! It will be interesting to see if the government will succumb to blackmail.
It will also be interesting if any PSP (Private Sector Participation) contractual arrangements can work in Nigeria with constant threats of situations like this.
