An 8yr old doesn't need a laptop. Buy him a guitar.....My dad got me one for my 10th birthday, and till today, its still my most prized possession. I'm now a guru on strings and will buy one for my kids too.

It is great that you want to do something nice for your nephew and we all want to be that special aunt or uncle, but in my opinion a laptop as a gift for an 8 year old kid in this country seems a bit overboard. Besides, for your stated budget, you would most likely get something that would be eventually be a waste.

Why not get him something befitting his age that is actually fun and educative at the same time and from which he could benefit mentally from for the birthday gift and then let him earn the laptop with good grades at school or some other deserving accomplishment that would teach him the value of hard / smart work?

As it is, most of our kids are getting spoiled rather early, all in the name of getting them something nice as gifts.

8 Yr old kid with laptop. Unless he is on a genius level, he will not be able to fully utilize the functions of the laptop.

There are lots of educational laptops designed for kids his age. I think that would benefit him more than giving him a HP laptop at his age.

I find something very annoying on this thread,many people here believe that a laptop will spoil the child but the question I have for them is if they are abroad or living in America will they consider a laptop or tablet too much for their 8 years old kid
This is the reason why majority of Africans will continue to live in poverty,they believe that certain good things are only good for kids abroad but too much for kids in Nigeria .what is so special about laptop or tablet that some people are saying it will spoil the child?
