If you think apc have the intentions of telling the truth any time soon, you are on a long thing. By the time passengers start complaining about poor service, they will remember GEJ and pdp and how there was not enough money to do maintenance. They will forget they were making 5million in two weeks |

Will go on tourism from Abj to Kaduna very soon and will be spending 4 days. If we liberalise our political structure, sTates can go into patnership with other states to creat their own rail-line thereby boosting their IGR. |

He does not have the daily records of a flagship service shows there is already stealing there. Why aren't thd Chinese running it. Why?. And the first casualty of lack of record/stealing is maintenance and eventually system collapse. That service should be in private hands under concession. As to the economics, 5 million to the rail lines means 4 million out of the hands of private transporters which is not cool. What however is wonderful is the number of vehicles off the Abuja/Kaduna Highway. This translates to a few extra hours or days in the lifespan of that road and will save huge amounts in road maintenance costs. Why I say a few hours or days as opposed to months or years is that the prime factor in Nigerian road lifespan remains the heavy loading or overloading as depicted by trucks and other articulated vehicles. This is what we should be targetting first or as a priority. And the Kaduna/Abuja route has no serious cargo demand. But take a look at the Oshodi/Apapa Highway, the closer you get to the ports, the worse the roads get and are always in perpetual reconstruction, gulping billions over the years, no wonder Julius berger has a yard in that area because they see what we don't, that the road cannot be permanently fixed, ever, so they set up shop waiting like lions at the only watering hole in the savannah knowing for certainty the buffaloes will come at dusk to drink. 1 Like |

That is good, but that is not the figure we need. What is the profit from the 5M earning? It is the profit that will make it sustainable, not the gross earnings 1 Like |

Is the N5m gross or is it net? This is one question I doubt we ever ask in Nigeria. Railways and trains require a massive amount of routine maintenance. Whilst declaring that N5m has been made, has daily operational and maintenance costs been subtracted?... Have railway personnel been paid?.... Or would government continue to supply cash for operations and maintenance and salaries of railway staff from the budget? I've said it before, railway business should be business to make profit and even revenue for government; government should hands off the managing of these railways for private investors if the railway initiative must survive. MAny might find this comment strange, but I think the N500 fare for Abuja to Kaduna route is too cheap for a high speed comfortable train, the subsidized fare is just a political move which will eventually end in disaster. Just like our dead refineries, instead of making profits for government, the trains will be a government liability instead of an asset. Train transport is not cheaper than road transport in the developed world where things work, in the UK for instance, inter-city train travel is even more expensive than travelling by flight. Government should look for a way to privatise these new rails to investors who can manage them efficiently. |
