It's not because of the bride price why some Igbo women stay in abusive marriages- that's not unique to the Igbos btw- as the bride price is usually very cheap and can easily be given back. The main reason why they stay is because of the stigma of divorce; many Igbos see marriage as sacred and something that one should do their utmost to uphold. Women are seen as the keepers of the home so it's particularly damning to them if their marriage fails. I don't believe that victims of domestic violence should stay with their abusers but I just want to make it clear that Igbos take marriage very seriously due to moral reasons not monetary ones.
