From more than 160 countries, about 4,350 athletes are expected to gather at Rio de Janeiro for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games to compete for 528 medal events in 22 different sports.

Following three different rounds of voting by eligible International Olympic Committee members, Rio de Janeiro eventually emerged as winners and hosts of the 2016 Olympic Games by winning 66 votes from a possible 98. Other Candidate cities that competed for the right to host the 2016 Games were Chicago (United States), Tokyo (Japan) and Madrid (Spain).
