Overwatch: Origins Edition Review by cao(f): 7:02pm On Sep 13, 2016
Finally finished playing Overwatch Free Weekend, so here's the review.

Wow, just wow...this has been the most fun I've had in a FPS game. This game is fantastic for the aiming impaired **coughs** me **coughs** and it just blew me away. But, make no mistake this is not a solid 5/5 or 10/10 game. There are only  4 regular modes (Assault, Escort, Hybrid and Control), a competitive mode, one special mode with limitations (currently Brawl), 13 maps and no campaign mode, but where it really shines is its roster of 22 characters, the ability to change heroes during a match and the fact that it's truly based on players' skills, understanding and sometimes trolling ability.

I played over 10 hours, at the last time I checked - wasn't able to check my final time due to my final match ending just before the midnight deadline. Personally, I was able to get into the characters & gameplay and as you can see from my highlight reel below, I've already gotten my regulars - D.Va, Bastion, Zenyatta, Reinhardt (he's actually missing from my reel) & Reaper (I got used to using him rather late in my playthrough). Although, I had to explain to some of the guys I was playing with how the characters worked, since they're proper FPS gamers with rapid response aiming & K/D obliteration, they found their initial solace in Soldier 76 before getting to grips with the game.

It's very addictive, even with its limited modes and maps, you never really play the same game twice. It all depends on how all the players plays as a team and how your team reacts. I know for a fact, I've never played a FPS this intensely. I've owned Call of Duty: Black Ops III since January and I still haven't made it to level 40 on multiplayer. I played Overwatch this weekend only and I'm 952 points away from level 21. Yes, I really did calculate it.

Overwatch is fantastic for the casual shooter gamer, with its team and objective based gameplay, it's not as daunting as the classic shooters. You don't need to be a sniping god. As you can see in this video below, Call of Duty fanatics can sometimes be easily beaten, since they can be distracted by their ability to rack up eliminations, while you can easily capture the objective.

The full retail price seems a bit steep with its current content, but with Blizzard declaring all future DLCs (maps, characters, modes etc) as part of the price, it seems a bargain for the long run, but I'm personally waiting for it to go below £20. It's still an online only game with no campaign. Blizzard give us a campaign mode, the characters have a rich background and live in an interesting world (as seen in other Overwatch related media), we'd like to play that.

Final Verdict
3.5 out of 5 (for now)

The game looks like great fun.

I was first attracted to it when I watched Conan play it with Tyrion & Cersei. :p (Conan O'Brien: Clueless Gamer with Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey.)

The game reminded me heavily of JSRF, which is admittedly one of the best games I've ever played.

Unfortunately, in terms of gaming, I'm in the stone age, having played a few titles from the generation of the 360, but this is one game I'd love to play. Hopefully by the time I get the chance it won't have lost its spark.

Once again, looks good, and I'd love to jump into multiplayer without the fear of having my many deaths inputted into some professionals YouTube reel.

PS: I know you said it's Blizzard, but for some reason, I kept thinking the game was Ubisoft... I dunno why.

HyDef, I keep hearing it being compared to Team Fortress 2 (never played it). I don't know why you thought of Ubisoft...This is Blizzard's first original IP since 1998.

Sorry Hiroto, I don't do PC reviews, my laptop is an entry level gaming laptop. Only PS4.

Never played TF2 either, but it was actually the second thing to pop up in my head. Maybe based on the online multiplayer-only gameplay.

That's why I was even more surprised at it being Blizzard... But first IP since 98?? Jeez. Guess Warcraft and Starcraft had them unconcerned.

PS: Was just reading some about the game, and read about Lucio, a character seemingly inspired by JSRF. Score, I guess. :p

The love I have for this game, folks think I actually own the game, I like the visuals of Overwatch, BF1 beta confused the hell out of me...Although, I did play BF1 solo, while I played Overwatch with friends.

Finally got a copy, should be receiving either on Monday or Tuesday. If there are any Overwatch players on NL, holla.

Watching your videos on Overwatch reminds me of the days of Unreal Tournament and GoldenEye.
