Resident doctors at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (ABUTH) in Zaria, Kaduna state have begun an indefinite strike action.

The doctors, through the National Association of Resident Doctors, ABUTH chapter, announced the development in a statement on Monday, September 19.

The doctors said the association its best to avoid proceeding on the strike, but the management did not help matters.
The statement said some of the earlier steps taken “include a peaceful protest from hall to accident and emergency, press conference, a three-day warning strike and two-week ultimatum to the management of the hospital to do the right thing.

“Yet, the management only succeeded in constituting a committee under Prof. Abdulmuminu Rafindadi, (former CMD) but at the end of the day, the management failed to address the issues raised”.
But Daily Post quotes the Chief Medical Director Chief Medical Director (CMD) Prof. Lawal Khalid as saying the doctors strike is just because they wanted money.
“We must be fair to ourselves, as health professionals, we must not consider money above our primary responsibility of care and great concern for the patient, as such, money should be secondary.
“Remember, in Nigeria, there are some workers who spent months without salary, yet they did not embark on strike, but somebody who eats three square meals with meat says he is not contempted because there is no butter in the soup.

“The main issue that all other things revolved around is the issue of skipping of level and we did not get money from the Federal Government, this issue took us up to budget office, Abuja and this is not peculiar to ABUTH, because it affects many hospitals across Nigeria.
“However, we’ve been able to meet some of the demands raised by the doctors as a result of a committee we formed involving elders of the hospital who sat with them to find a lasting solution,” he said.
