In a communique from his media office,
former governor of Lagos state and political
heavyweight Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu
who is also the national leader of the All
Progressives Congress (APC) has demanded
that John Oyegun resign.
Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is the national chairman
of the APC and he seems to have stepped on
Tinubu’s toes, for Tinubu to call for his resignation
from the party.
In his statement, after stating the good pledges of
the APC, Tinubu said: “Chairman John Oyegun
has breached these good pledges in a most
overt and brazen display. In doing so,
Oyegun has dealt a heavy blow to the very
party he professes to lead. It is an awful
parent who suffocates his own child for the
sake of a few naira.”
Oyegun is one in a list of people who have angered
Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who many view as someone to
be feared in the Nigerian political sphere. Here is a
list of people who have managed to step on his
toes:
1. Chief John Odigie-Oyegun
Tinubu has called for the resignation of Chief John
Odigie-Oyegun from APC
Born on August 12, 1939, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun
is the first national chairman of APC in Nigeria. He
was also the executive governor of Edo state
between 1992 and 1993, during the aborted Nigerian
Third Republic.
As stated at the outset, the chairman has stepped
on the toes of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, causing Tinubu
to call for his resignation. The problem started at
the Ondo APC primaries held this month,
where Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu emerged
winner.
According to the statement by Tinubu, Oyegun
sanctioned some illegal activities to enable
Akeredolu emerge winner and therefore needs to
resign from the party. Many however, feel that this
is because Tinubu’s favored candidate Segun
Abraham did not win.
Oyegun is yet to respond to the call for his
resignation, but one thing is obvious. Between
Tinubu and Oyegun, a battle line has been drawn.
2. Bukola Saraki
Bukola Saraki has been in and out of the Code of
Conduct Tribunal since 2015
Senate President Bukola Saraki has been in and
out of the court room for most of his tenure since
2015. He is accused of false declaration of assets
when he was still governor of Kwara state. His trial
at the Code of Conduct Tribunal has been one of
the most interesting dramas on the Nigerian political
scene.
On April 23, 2016, Saraki alleged that his problems
began he emerged President of the Senate against
the wishes of the leadership of the APC and Mr
Tinubu who backed another candidate, Ahmed
Lawan, for the post.
“I have also been accused of helping to
frustrate some people’s opportunity to
emerge as President Muhammadu Buhari’s
running mate,” Saraki said. “But I have no
problem with anybody.”
He also alleges that Tinubu was after him because
he was accused of blocking Tinubu from being
President Buhari’s running mate in the 2015
elections.
Justifying his decision to go against Tinubu, Saraki
said he was concerned that it would not have been
“politically smart” for the APC to run a Muslim-
Muslim ticket since both Tinubu and Buhari are
