Jermain Defoe’s sensational volley gave Sunderland a 1-0 win over Newcastle in 2015. Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has named Jermain Defoe’s sensational volley in the 2015 Tyne-Wear derby as the best goal he has ever witnessed, while speaking on the club’s YouTube channel.

The goal came on 5 April 2015 in a tight affair between the two North East clubs. A long ball was headed down by striker Steven Fletcher, who found his strike partner Defoe, with the England international striking the ball on the volley first time, looping it over a despairing Tim Krul and into the net to send the Stadium of Light crazy. When asked what the best goal he has ever witnessed is, the 22-year-old goalkeeper replied: “It’s got to be JD, Jermain Defoe against Newcastle in the derby when we won. Screamer.”

Defoe’s strike gave Dick Advocaat his first win as Sunderland boss, having only just taken over as Black Cats manager, eventually keeping them in the Premier League. The goal will have added importance for Pickford, who as a local lad would have loved seeing his club defeating their arch rivals. The victory was part of the famous six wins in a row Sunderland recorded over the Magpies.
As a goalkeeper, Pickford will be able to appreciate how good a strike it was just like the Magpies goalkeeper Krul did, who waited for Defoe in the tunnel at half time to tell him just how good it was, which did not go down well with some Newcastle fans.

Pickford will have celebrated that goal like a fan and will be hoping he can celebrate as a player in the future should the Black Cats meet their neighbours again.
