The scary APOLLO infection is back. This is the time to start avoiding handshakes, time to be on top of your personal hygiene, time to get your pack of hand sanitizer and to start washing your hands regularly. This should actually be your regular routine but thanks for infection like this that keeps you on check. Doing the right thing always can make this world a better place to live in. I am so sure a lot of you are guilty of inadequate personal hygiene.
The medical term for APOLLO is conjunctivitis, this condition is common prior to the rainy season, so popularly known as SEASONAL CONJUNCTIVITIS.

Though many things can cause inflammation of the conjunctivitis which includes ALLERGIES, VIRAL INFECTIONS AND BACTERIAL INFECTIONS.

In simplicity conjunctivitis is defined as the inflammation of the conjunctiva of sudden onset which causes reddening of the eyes due to the infection of the conjunctiva.

Other symptoms are production of whitish discharge from the eyes, itching, and severe redness. These symptoms can cause partial loss of vision in some people and they are advised to avoid driving and operating machines. This loss of vision is caused when the eyes are filled with the discharge, the eyelids stick together requiring great effort in separating them.

This eye infection has very fast rate of infection, once an eye is infected, it takes a little while to affect the other. As the infected person moves around the infection spreads. A high level of hygiene is required so that the rate of infection can be regulated.

                                                             PREVENTION

The one and only way to prevent APOLLO is to practice good hygiene, this is the best control over the spread of APOLLO. For instance:

Don’t touch your eyes with your hands.
Wash your hands often.
Use only clean towels and washcloths.
Don’t share towels or washcloths.
Change your pillowcases often.
Avoid swimming in a swimming pool.
Throw away your eye cosmetics.
Don’t share eye cosmetics or personal eye care items.
Use any antibiotics for the complete period prescribed.
Apollo symptoms may resolve in three to seven days. Children with viral conjunctivitis may be contagious for a week or more. Children may return to school when the redness and discharge in their eyes subsides.

If your child has bacterial conjunctivitis, keep him or her away from school until after treatment is started. Most schools and child care facilities require that your child wait at least 24 hours after starting treatment before returning to school or child care. CONTACT us if you have any questions.
