The Nigeria Universal Domestic Gas Project Would Be A Total Fiasco. by kosovo(m): 3:57pm On Oct 21, 2009
When we first heard that the Nigerian Government would soon be among nations providing universal Gas Access to her entire citizens, It was accepted with divergence views, though the jubilations from the citizens outperformed any other criticism that arrived or may arrive. Most people were of the view that, the wasted Gas emanating from these oil companies could finally be put to use, and could boost the economy of the Nation. But as rational being, I refused to accept those fabulous claims and decided to look inwardly, did some research, and came out with some findings, which I had discussed with some people, and as usual it lead to arguments and counter- arguments.
In Developed Nations, before such project was adopted, there was the need for strategic planning, adequate research and a comprehensive survey of the entire topography, weather, and infrastructure available, with a view of finding a rapid and holistic approach in the cases of emergencies. There was also the dire need to changing the general overhaul of the Fire services, and reforming the sector, which is of greatest importance. But overhear the reverse is case, such a project which has already begun in some states would be very devastating and disastrous, because it would have been have been given to contractors at their infancy state. Hence resulting to non-completion of projects and wastage of tax-payers money. This is however as a result of the same old discredited Nigeria philosophy of nepotism, tribalism, echinocritsm, Godfatherism and political jingoism drawing the whole world backward!
Nigeria in its current state, is poised with the saddle of a very poor Fire service, the problems ravaging the sector happens to be lack of man power, outdated equipments, lack of communication gadgets, mismanagements, Obnoxious governmental policies, low allowances, disorientation of the workers, and non-propensity to work. Have you ever seen a scene when a building is on fire? If you have, you would know what I mean. The fire vehicles are usually not sufficient, and the house is raised and destroyed completely. Sometime when there is a distress call, you either hear there is no water, or there is no fuel. Now imagine what would happen if a gas pipeline suddenly explode, or a street is engulfed with fire, definitely it would lead to massive loss of lives and properties and it could even spread round a full city, burning it to ashes. When there were wild fires in California, occasioned by dry forest or whatever, it took the skills, professionalism, massive influx of equipments and the grace of God for such to be put out, sometimes, The last Fire disaster took the efforts of over 2000 firemen to outperform. What if such results from an explosion of one of our gas station? It would spread like hell because it GAS. What will happen? Does Nigeria have up to 5000 firemen?  Before we can take this bold step, we must first ensure that our Fire services is properly reformed, that should provide for massive rehabilitation of Fire service centers, purchase of Fire vehicles, and provision of water dispersion units in each streets. In my own opinion, Provision of water to the entire Nation should have been of topmost priority, because it would work pari passu with the Fire services to ensuring effective delivery of life saving services. Water is life, Aren’t we Tired of folding our arms and watching local government chairmen and Governors commission Water Boreholes in communities and such is also make headlines in local TV, Radio and Print media? It’s time for Nigerians to actually look more carefully at issues and stop this madness. Let the Government tell us their plans, and what actions would be taken in the case of an emergency.
