Challenges of Starting a Cooking Gas Retail Business

Your sales is highly dependent on the economic situation of your region

If your business is sited in a region where the standard of living is poor and the residents use more of

firewood and kerosene stove, then your business is already a failure from the start. So try to site your

business in a positive economic area with working class residents. You can also target restaurants,

fast food outlets, etc, as they will be needing a steady supply of gas.

Nigeria is ranked lowest in sub-Saharan Africa per capita usage of cooking gas consuming 1.1kg

compared with Ghana at 3.0kg, South Africa 5.5kg, and Morocco 44kg per capita.

Mr Haruna Momoh (Managing Director of Pipelines and Products Marketing Company PPMC) said there is

an urgent need for Nigerians to join the rest of the world in maximizing the benefits of the abundance of

cooking gas we have. Momoh noted that resources spent on kerosene subsidy could be put into more

productive areas such as infrastructural development, education, health and agriculture for the welfare of citizens.

What is the future of cooking gas in Nigeria?

The world has continued to witness sustained band shift in crude oil and gas prices since 2004 and this has triggered major changes in

the global energy landscape.

Business Monitor International (BMI) believes Nigerian gas consumption will rise from an estimated 5.8bcm in 2012 to 15.0bcm by 2022.

Steps TO Clean Your Cooking Gas Griller

The first thing is to make sure your cooking gas cools off before you clean. Apart from burns which may affect your hand, cleaning a hot appliance can damage the appliance if water slips into sensitive parts; therefore make sure it is totally cold before starting the cleaning process.

After the grill has cooled off, systematically disassemble the parts, this is to ensure you clean each part in isolation of others. Cleaning them together is not advisable as it may not have the expected outcome you desire.

Clean the knobs and handles. These parts are the contact parts of a cooking gas grill and they are frequently soiled and oiled. Use a degreaser spray after cleaning with a dry rag. Give it at least ten minutes and then clean them off. The major function of the degreaser spray is to destroy any germ and bacteria buildup that may turn-up.

Nigeria possesses tremendous oil and gas potentials and has had significant capacity additions in the last few years.

The oil and gas industry is rapidly growing not only as an assistance to national development but also helping to meet global demand.

Consequently, Nigeria is well positioned to meet the global oil and gas supply needs sustainably while ensuring ongoing wealth creation

in the domestic economy.

Although the recent unrest in the Niger Delta is a challenge.

There has been significant progress through key initiatives such as the local content drive, increased local participation, etc

Cooking gas, known scientifically as liquefied petroleum gas, is perhaps one of the most popular fuels for cooking apart from kerosene and

it is gradually usurping the position of kerosene as the preference of people is shifting towards gas.

The reason for this is not far-fetched.

Cooking gas although not cheaper than kerosene, is a cheaper option at the end of the day because it lasts longer and cooks food faster,

thereby saving fuel.

For many years when there was no use for LPG/Cooking gas, it was counted as a wasted product while refining crude oil.

The production of LPG/Cooking gas does not entail manufacturing because it already exists in another product.

So, it could actually be referred to as a by-product but a useful one.

LPG/Cooking gas is processed via two methods.

It is either processed by cleaning natural gas of impurities such as various hydrocarbons which include the methane, ethane, ethene,

propene, isobutene, butadiene, pentane and pentene

LPG/Cooking gas value chains start's from the production.

It moves down to refineries for further processing and then to terminals to bottling and storage where they are stored into the gas

cylinders and then it moves to the retail sellers who sell through cylinders to consumers.

Business Intelligence Update:

Most of the energy used for domestic cooking in Nigerian homes comes from traditional forms of energy like HHK (kerosene) which

accounts for 65-70% of the energy consumption in Nigeria, LPG(cooking gas) stands at 25%, while other fossil fuels like firewood and

coals accounts for the remaining 5%.

Now lets do some basic mathematics from the post above

Annual Consumption of cooking Gas stands at 300,000 MTPA (300million KG)

25% of annual consumption= 300million kg (527million litres)

Now imagine if we can switch another 25% of our population from House Hold Kerosene to cooking gas in the next 36 months

50% of annual consumption= 600million kg (1.54billion Litres)

Considering the negative impact of kerosene on the economy (subsidy) and the environment, it's important for us as Nigerians to look

inward and invest in this emerging sector to grow the naira and reduce the emission of green house gases to curb global warming

let's join hands to make Nigeria a cleaner place and become millionaires in the process.

The good news is gas cylinders are so safe they rarely explode, the only way they could be a problem is if there is a leak (which is rare)

because of the thickness of the gas cylinder. And in most cases, the safety of using cooking gas is largely based on you. In other words, there

are hardly surprises involved with using cooking gas.

LPG is a clean, non toxic and non-pollutant to the atmosphere.

It is easy and instantaneous to light, non pisonous and safe to use

The blue flame is visible and its size is easily controlled over a wide range so required rate of hetaing can be obtained.

Cooking is quick and does not get your kitchen heated as with other fuels.

LPG does not produce smoke, soot or unplesant smell during usage, therefore leaving the kitchen clean

When any LPG appliance or gas cooker or burner fails to ignite immediately, turn off the gas supply and ventilate for at least three minutes to allow any gas to disperse before attempting to reignite.

If possible, stop the leak by shutting the cylinder valve.

Things to look out for when looking for a location to set up your LPG facility..

1. The location should not be sighted under an electric power line

2. It should be at least 200 metres away from a canal or river or any water bodies as the case maybe.

3. It should be at least 2 plots of land for a standard plant and 20 by 30 ft for a mini skid plant.

4. It should be situated at least 1000 feet away from residential buildings.

Aside all of this, the quality of installation and equipment for your facility is important, you are advised to use DPR registered installers for

your facility.

LPG / COOKING GAS MEASUREMENTS

People frequently ask how cooking gas is measured.

People ask the questions in many ways and the simplest way to answer most of them is to explain in details

Unlike water, 1kg of LPG does NOT equal 1L of LPG. This is because the density of LPG / Cooking Gas is less than water.

LPG kg to litres (1kg = 1.75L)
LPG Litres to kg (1L = 0.75kg)
LPG Tonnes to Kg (1ton = 1000kg)

So to convert a 12.5kg cylinder to litres, it is calculated to be:
12.5kg X 1.75L (standard conversion rate)= (21.9 litres)

And to convert a 2500kg worth of gas Litres (for gas plant owners), it is calculated to be:
2500kg X 1.75L = 4375 Litres

WHEN YOU THINK THERE IS A LEAK FROM YOUR COOKING GAS CYLINDER

Check the entire system for ANY indication of gas leak, such as smell or hiss.

Test with soapy water solution, which will bubble at any point where gas escapes. NEVER use a match, flame or plain water to test for a leak.

If the leak has been indoors, fully ventilate the room before further use of appliance. Open doors and windows for fresh air to come in.

Do not interfere with any part of a fixed installation just call an expert to help you further.

With an organized kitchen, it is easy to tell in advance what ingredients you have and what you are missing.

Unfortunately, kitchens are usually the busiest rooms in any house where family members are always in and out; constantly sorting through pantries and cabinets.

Older food items get pushed to the back in the refrigerator where it might rot behind the newer items.

It is a herculean task to keep the kitchen neat and organized at all times which is why it’s important to do a thorough clean sweep at least once in every two weeks.

Gases are obviously more inflammable than kerosene. And that explains why they burn hotter and cook faster than kerosene. On the flip side, they are likely to spread faster in the case of a fire outbreak.

But the truth is that no fuel is without its own hazards. The trick is finding which works best and managing it in a safe environment.

The good news gas cylinders are so safe they rarely explode, the only way they could be a problem is if there is a leak (which is rare) because of the thickness of the gas cylinder.

HOW TO REFILL CUSTOMERS CYLINDERS

Want to start a cooking gas business but you don't know how to refill gas cylinders?

Easy

There are two basic ways gas cylinders can be filled depending on the nature of the filling system i.e automatic or pneumatic filling system.

For automatic dispensing system, the exact amount or quantity of (kg or litres) is pressed on the dispenser while the refilling nozzle is already inserted in the cylinder. In this way, the system automatically stops dispensing once the pre-determined amount of gas is reached.

For the pneumatic dispensing system, the cylinder is place on a digital scale and the scale is adjusted to its zero limit. Then, the nozzle of the filling system is fitted to the value of the cylinder and the system is stopped as soon as the pre-determined amount of gas is reached.

Now You know

How do you handle gas cylinders

– Always place gas cylinders in a vertical position, unless stated otherwise by the manufacturer.
– Restrain cylinders securely to prevent them from falling over.
– Always ensure that the cylinder valves are tightly closed.
– Ensure that the valve is protected by a valve cap to prevent any damage if the cylinder is dropped.
– When loading or unloading the cylinders, never drag, drop or roll the cylinder as these can cause major physical damages to the cylinders.
– Always ensure that the cylinders are kept in a well ventilated warehouse with regards to the manufacturer's ambient temperature standard.
– Always ensure that the cylinders are placed on wooden pallet and not on a bare floor.
– Prevent direct physical contact among cylinders in storage.

Where do you buy cooking gas from

If you plan to go into the cooking gas retail business, it is necessary to know the best source or sources to get your gas from.

NAVGAS is currently the biggest offtaker (gas seller) in Nigeria, another very reliable offtaker is NIPCO and they are both located at Apapa in Lagos state.

One of the things to know about cooking gas business is "How is cooking gas measured?". The measurement of cooking gas plays an important role in the cooking gas retail business because error when measuring the amount of gas needed to refill a gas cylinder could lead to loss in your business or complaints from your customers or both. Cooking gas can be measured in litres, kilogrammes and tonnes.

1 kilogramme is equivalent to 1.75 litres

1 metric tonne is equivalent to 1000 kilogrammes

1 metric tonne is also equivalent to 1750 litres

Now you know the correct measurements of cooking gas so you can know for sure when you are being cheated if you are at the purchasing end and for cooking gas retailers you now know exactly what your customers want.
