– President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his deepest condolences to the Saro Wiwa family, the people of Rivers state, and Nigerians on the sudden and tragic passing of Ken Wiwa

– He also commiserates with the people of Ogoni kingdom over the passage of their illustrious son

– He also said prayed that the Almighty God will comfort all who mourn the deceased and grant his soul eternal rest



President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Saro-Wiwa family as well as the government and people of Rivers state on the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa Jnr.

In a statement by the special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, the president also commiserates with the people of Ogoni kingdom over the passage of their illustrious son, author and environmental activist, who was an ardent believer in the unity, progress and stability of his community.

The statement reads in parts: “President Buhari joins them in mourning the sudden and painful passing of a promising Nigerian whose willingness and dedication to the clean-up of Ogoni land inspired a healing process in Nigeria after the death of his father, Ken Saro-Wiwa.

“As the world mourns Saro-Wiwa Jnr, the president believes the commitment of the journalist in serving three Nigerian presidents in various capacities clearly exemplifies his patriotism, statesmanship and foresightedness.

“President Buhari, who has initiated the process of cleaning up the Niger Delta region, urges family, friends and associates to honour Saro-Wiwa’s memory by making his dream of an environmentally safe, secured and prosperous Ogoni land a reality.

“The president prays that the Almighty God will comfort all who mourn the deceased and grant his soul eternal rest.”

The Niger Delta region has been thrown into mourning following the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr. According to Sahara Reporters, Saro-Wiwa Jr died on Tuesday, October 18.

The son of the late Ogoni activist served as an adviser to former president, Goodluck Jonathan.

His father, Ken Saro-Wiwa was a member of the Ogoni people, an ethnic minority in the Niger Delta. Due to his activism against the degradation of the land and waters of the Ogoni people by oil companies.

Meanwhile, Buhari has consoled the widow of the environmental activist, Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr, assuring that her family is not alone in mourning the passage of the illustrious son of Ogoni land.

In a telephone call on Thursday, the president, while consoling the widow and her children, enjoined them to take solace in the knowledge that their late husband and father lived to see the beginning of the restoration of the devastated ecosystem of Ogoni land – a struggle which he had inherited from his late father, Ken Saro-Wiwa.

He urged the widow to remain emotionally strong and resilient at this sad period in the life of the family, stressing that Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr did not die in vain, as his earthly exploits will remain evergreen in national consciousness.

The president’s telephone call followed his condolence message on Wednesday, in which he extolled the achievements of the late author and journalist.
