Though there are multiple methods of creating three parents embryos, in this case New York City fertility specialist Dr John Zhang used a method called "maternal spindle transfer". He performed the procedure on a woman's womb in Mexico because it's currently illegal in the United States.

Rather than contemplating potential consequences, American scientists are pushing to make this procedure legal in the U.S, touting its "glorious potential". The overall goal which was to replace genetically defective mitochondria in a woman's cell with healthy mitochondria using a female donor egg.

This germline genetic modification means the modification affects not only the new manufactured individual but will also be passed on to future generations.
