The Lagos House of Assembly has recommended death by hanging as charges for kidnapping in Lagos state. This was disclosed last night when the Assembly held a general public hearing over a bill for a law to give the prohibition of the action of kidnapping and other linked purposes.



The bill sponsored by the speaker of the Lagos state House of assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, explained that anybody, who kidnaps, abducts, details or catches or takes someone else at all with objective to demand ransom or do anything against his/her will commits an offence, and is likely on conviction to death sentence.

The death charges in the bill by the Assembly is a stiffer charges for the 21 years imprisonment at the moment provided in their state criminal code.

It isn’t only folks found guilty of kidnapping that might be penalised, those who participated along the way or attempted kidnapping wouldn’t normally go unpunished, as the bill provides that anybody, who knowingly or willfully allows or enables his premises, building or a accepted place owed or occupied to which he has control of, to be utilized for the purposes of keeping a person kidnapped is guilty of an offence under regulations and liable on conviction to a term of imprisonment of 14 years lacking any option of fine.

Also, a Key Magistrate in Lagos House, Mrs Seri Sholebo said that it was important to include conspiracy to kidnapping, disclosing that convicting offenders based on conspiracy since 2011 have been a herculean job.

In the mean time, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said that to earn the warfare against terrorism in Nigeria would require collaborative work among the individuals and strong synergy among security organizations.
