Just Curious, Why Do People Blur Plate Numbers While Taking Pictures??? by kayStelly(f): 6:28pm On Oct 27, 2016 |
Have been thinking lately as to why people intentionally blur their number plate while taking pictures. Its so common these days that even cars that are 1998 model, u still find out that people still blur out the plate. Is it for security purposes?? If yes, don't we see these cars on our streets on daily bases?? Moreover, people dont drive their cars with blurred plate numbers..... So, what then is the rationale behind online blurring of pictures....?? Someone that knows should please, clear my doubt 3 Likes 1 Share |

I just try to snap a car plate number and it was blur automatically. this is the reason: plate number is white then plus your camera flash, d thing must blur na. i have to turn off my flash to snap it. |

The answer is right there in your post Security reasons. I know one might ask, why bother, after all the car gets seen in different places. Emm...why bother leaving your nairaland profile picture blank too? Don't you get seen daily? Visibility: larger audience/viewers: you use the picture as dp, a friend saves, uses as dp, uploads on instagram, then facebook... . Your number plate gets to places you have never been. Number plates cloners may get to see it, clone and use it for robbery. A quick search on FRSC database links it to your car. Then you realise police is your friend (indeed). Basically, it's a form of 'risk reduction'. 13 Likes 3 Shares |

Security reasons. You see cars on the road... can read the number plates. Do you know who owns the car? or anything about the owner?..or who travels in that car? ...do you know anything special about the car itself? Would it make a difference if Dangote posts on social media that he travels around in a Toyota Camry and posts a picture with him posing with the car displaying the number plate? What do you think can happen if he does? I know you can now answer your own question. |

PaperLace: I'm not sure that's the major reason..I believe it's as a result of the fact that the moment you search for a registration/plate number on www.askniid.org ...N.I.I.D (Nigerian Insurance Industry Database)...the result brings out the name of the owner of the car, as well as his registered home address, policy number, expiry date...etc. That puts the owner in a vulnerable position. it's worthy to note now, that such personal information is now being hidden. A quick search on a number plate, on the data base now, simply brings out the type of car, policy type, expiry date...etc...personal information about the owner of such a car...is now being hidden/protected. |

Its basically for privarcy of personal data and security reasons as well. Especially when I'm posting such pictures online. |

Alvin007: Wow, ever since I knew of that site (from Nairaland too)I never knew it to include personal information. ThankGod it's now hidden. Well, it still boils down to security reasons. I want to believe the cars whose details are in that site are insured. What percentage of Nigerian cars are insured? For the uninsured cars, what's their reason? |
Re: Just Curious, Why Do People Blur Plate Numbers While Taking Pictures??? by Alvin007: 9:26pm On Nov 15, 2016 |
PaperLace: You would hardly find an uninsured car in Nigeria...there are different types of car insurance, ranging from third party to comprehensive...and all are included in the data base..as for those who still use the fake third party insurance...the least problem they could ever face, is worrying about covering their plates...after all, no thief can deprive them of what they don't have. |
Re: Just Curious, Why Do People Blur Plate Numbers While Taking Pictures??? by Nobody: 11:09am On Nov 16, 2016 |
Alvin007: Are you in Nigeria at all? Abi you're in the elite part of Nigeria? Lots and lots of Nigerians are yet to embrace insurance. You can start by taking a quick survey here on NL. Most people I have met prefer trackers. The fake third party insurance is actually a norm. Do you know how many "help-find-my-stolen-car" graces front page regularly? I am sure you know. 2 Likes |
Re: Just Curious, Why Do People Blur Plate Numbers While Taking Pictures??? by Alvin007: 12:08pm On Nov 16, 2016 |
PaperLace: U really don't get the gist here. Government made insurance mandatory(at least a third party type)..If u have a car and u can't even afford getting a genuine third party insurance..the last thing that should be on your mind, is how to cover your plates for 'security' E.g Robbery...reasons. I hope u understand my point this time. I don't know whether u've observed that most of these cars with their plate numbers blurred in pictures, are the expensive ones. |
Re: Just Curious, Why Do People Blur Plate Numbers While Taking Pictures??? by Nobody: 12:15pm On Nov 16, 2016 |
Alvin007: Okay...now I gerrit. A thread graced front page sometime ago on this government imposed insurance. People were asking of what use it is, considering the fact that they don't get indemnified in event of whatsoever loss. Expensive is subjective . I've learnt a lot from you_ Thanks much much. |
