Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a man of history. He read History and ultimately made history. He was born in the month of November 4, 1933, in Northern Nigeria of Igbo parents and was brought up in Lagos, South West Nigeria. In a most dramatic fashion, Ojukwu passed on in a private hospital in London, the same city where he bagged his first and master’s degrees as a student. Sensationally, Ojukwu died in November 2011, the month of his birth. Of course, he shared the same birthday month with other prominent Nigerians of Igbo stock, and incidentally all were of Anambra origin. They were Zik of Africa and Nigeria’s greatest political evangelist; and literary icon, Prof Chinua Achebe.

Early Wonders

The first sign that alerted people who knew Ojukwu about his future ingenuity and heroics was the kid’s courageous dispositions while he was at the King’s College, Lagos. At age 11, Ojukwu had already slapped a White teacher, a woman, for three factors namely; lack of food in the school, two; the White teacher slapped a Black man, three; there was unrest in the school due to inadequate facilities in the school.
