Just as the name implies, Bitter leaf is a vegetable that is well known for its bitterness. It is one of the vegetables widely used in Africa for cooking, for example bitter leaf soup, egusi soup.
Despite being used for cooking, do you know that bitter leaf is highly medicinal and can be used to prevent and cure many diseases.

Bitter leaf contains Vermodalin, Venomygdin and Saponin. These compounds make bitter leaf very effective.

The health benefits can be derived by squeezing the fresh leaves to get the juice and drinking the juice.

Here are some of the Health Benefits of bitter leaf

Relief Stomach Ache
For Stomach complications, you can chew 3 leaves of bitter leaf on an empty stomach in the morning, it is said to be a powerful antidote. Alternatively, you can chew the tender stem like chewing stick and swallow the juice. It’s also good for dizziness.

Prevents Malaria
Bitter leaf contains natural quinine and this help to prevent malaria and to relieve fever and feverish condition. To achieve this, squeeze out the juice from the fresh leaves and drink like half cup regularly.

Skin Infection
Another important benefit of bitter leaf is to treat skin infection due to its antibiotic and antifungal properties. Skin infections like ringworm, eczema, itching, rashes and others can be treated by applying squeezed out bitter leaf juice to the affected area daily. You may also drink the juice for quick treatment.

General Weakness
Do you feel weak and tired? Squeeze the leaf of bitter leaf plant in water and drink the juice three times a day.

Note: bitter leaf juice is not to be taken like water, just take a little quantity any time you want to take it. For example, any time I’m taking it for malaria treatment, I measure 12 tablespoon full in cup and take 3 times daily, but for prevention I take the same quantity once in 3 days. If taken too much, it causes dizziness in some people.
