Tinubu, Mimiko Adopt New Alternative Plans Over Ondo Governorship Contest by BeeBeeOoh(m): 4:26am On Nov 18, 2016
Leading candidates in the tussle for Ondo State governorship have intensified horse trading and power-sharing to shore up support for their aspirations, 10 days to the electoral contest.

THISDAY gathered that due to the bad blood and acrimony that trailed the emergence of the governorship candidates of the main parties — the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — the contest has become characterised by high level intrigues.

Aggrieved incumbent governor of the state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, is reported to be holding talks with the candidate of the APC, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu.

Mimiko and his preferred choice, Prof. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), have been having a running legal battle with businessman Jimoh Ibrahim over the ticket of the PDP. Mimiko has reportedly told the PDP supporters not to join the Alliance for Democracy (AD) if the legal fireworks did not favour Jegede before the November 26 governorship election.

It was learnt that in order to firm up the arrangement, Mimiko held a preliminary meeting with the Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha on Tuesday.
The meeting, which had the APC candidate, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), in attendance, took place at the Akure Airport.

A source close to the Ondo State governor told THISDAY that although no firm commitment was reached, Mimiko assured the duo of Okorocha and Akeredolu that if after the court processes Jegede did not fly, he would deploy his forces to back the APC candidate.

Said a Mimiko source: “It is true they met but not as people are speculating that Mr. Governor has already committed himself to the Akeredolu project. We are still confident we will win the mandate back. But if at the end of the day because of lack of time it happens that Jegede cannot fly, we have been told what to do.

“The governor and even those of us supporting Jegede believe that it is an insult for Tinubu to come from Lagos and install Iroko’s successor. It is an aberration we will fight, so rather than allow that, Iroko will be the one to swing support for Akeredolu to win because Ondo State belongs to us.”

On the other hand, the APC National Leader, Senator Bola Tinubu, is said to be rooting for Chief Olusola Oke, the candidate of the AD, following the edging out of his preferred candidate in the party primary, Chief Segun Abraham.

Oke had, like Abraham, lost out in the same exercise but opted for the Action Alliance (AA) before he moved to the AD allegedly on the directive of Tinubu.

There were strong indications that Tinubu has sealed a power sharing deal with Oke. Among the terms of the deal is that for bankrolling Oke, the Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, would nominate the secretary to the state government.

Among other things, the power sharing deal involves the distribution of cabinet slots and other strategic positions if Oke wins. But there is a caveat: the APC leaders must mobilise enough resources and voters to first ensure the victory of the AD candidate.

Although details of the power sharing deal were still kept secret, a source close to the deal disclosed that Oke had agreed to concede some positions to the APC national leader and Aregbesola.

They include: Secretary to the State Government (SSG), chairmanship of the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), Commissioners for Finance, Works, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Health and headship of the Ondo State Board of Internal Revenue. Others include six caretaker committee chairmanship positions, that is, two per senatorial district as well as four special advisers.

The source said: “You know that the circumstances that led us to the AD are very peculiar. At first, we wanted Action Alliance but when the national leader suggested that we need to test the ground with AD in lieu of the zone’s interest ahead of 2016, we had no choice than accept the AD proposal.

“But what I just told you is not abnormal in politics especially when you view it from the prism of the need to cut down the APC candidate. I can assure you that the arrangement will work perfectly well and we will have no problem about that.”

Meanwhile, the leadership of the AD has approved a waiver to enable Oke fly the party’s flag in the election.

In a statement by its National Chairman, Chief Joseph Avazi, yesterday, the party said that it had rectified the waiver for Oke at its National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja.

He said: “After a careful and exiting deliberation during the NEC meeting which took place on the 17th day of November, 2016 at Afri Hotel Abuja, in bid to move the party forward, the NEC hereby adopts the following resolution as issued in this communiqué.”
He said that the AD NEC meeting was monitored by INEC officials, Mr. Ifaladu Saadu and Mrs. Bola Adewon.

Very interesting, we will see who wins at the end of the day. Jegede may likely contest since the appeal court proceedings is going in his direction. So, the Mimiko/Akeredolu alliance will likely not work out.

In the end what is gonna be will be.
The right to assumption in power belongs to the people and it comes from God,and not the strategic elites nor the analytical bookmakers.

The election of Buhari and Donald Trump in recent political history should have taught the elites &their analysts the lesson that the trend is that of the populist candidate and not necessarily the political war chest.

Mimiko has lost the right and privilege of accusing anyone else of imposition. Oke wasn't imposed on Ondo people, he's tried, tested, competent, and has the requisite political pedigree. His alliance with some APC chieftains and Asiwaju is strategic and serves a larger objective of forestalling a calculated Fulani-influenced incursion in Ondo. Unlike Aketi who rides on other peopke's structures (like he did on Tinubu's ACN the last tume), Oke has enough clout and goodwill to deliver the votes. #Okegbemi

Oh really?Your hypocrisy is gangsta! Why not also include Lagos in your mention? Or Ogun? Fear catch you? Yinmu. But you are very ok with El-Rufai and his SW collaborators rigging in Aketi?? A Tinubu or even Mimiko imposition of a fellow Yoruba person is definitely more tolerable than an Abuja/Fulani slavemasters imposing a puppet in Yorubaland. #Kolewerk. cool

Mimiko is deceiving himself. He's a spent force. An undivided APC minus the current poor performance at the centre would've resoundingly thrashed the PDP in the state, considering how divided the PDP in the state currently is, add to that Mimiko's current low popularity ratings. The APC did it during the last presidential elections (when the PDP wasn't even as divided as it presently is), dispelling the myth of Mimiko's perceived invincibility. But as things stand, the APC is probably just as unpopular as Mimiko is in the state, if not more so, no thanks to the party's abysmal performance at the federal level, and the division within the state chapter of the party. Many Ondo APC folks are working against the party in this election, especially in the Northern Senatorial district where Aketi (Owo), Borroffice (Akoko SouthWest/SouthEast), and Abraham (Akoko NorthWest/NorthEast) all hail from.

This set are more like 'sleeper cells' who refuse to leave the party or openly speak against it, but are actively working to sabotage it from within. As it stands, Aketi needs the Akokos (who dominate 4 of the 6 local governments in the Northern Senatorial district) without whom he should forget the election, and these set have already endorsed Oke/Dauda. That's 4 local governments in the North senatorial district right there

http://www.ondoevents.com/2016/11/13/akoko-people-adopt-olusola-okeganny-dauda/

Mimiko could only deliver Ondo West and Ondo East LGs out of the 6 LGs in his supposed Central district powerbase to GEJ during the last pres. elections; he lost both Akure North and South (the largest voting bloc), Ifedore and Idanre to the APC even as a seating governor. That humiliation gave birth to his calculation to endorse an Akure indigene in the person of Jegede, in his desperation to sway their emotions and whip up sentiments this time around to support 'their son/one of their own' and help him stay relevant politically.

Unfortunately for him, Sherrif don pour sand for him garri grin cheesy. In fact, the Southern Senatorial District of Oke gave the PDP the most votes in that presidential election while Mimiko failed to deliver upon all his noise, coz GEJ/PDP won in ALL 6 LGs in Ondo South. That's Oke's constituency and he's not just any politician but a seasoned grassroot type (he's worth at least 150k votes on his own), he can DELIVER the entire 6 local governments, while Aketi at best can only be SURE of Owo and Ose in the North (even the last time he contested and came third behind Mimiko and Oke, it was Tinubu's ACN structures that he rode on). The Central Senatorial district will be the battleground.

Oke would have been a perfect choice, but his rumoured romance with tinubu is a no no for me. Mimiko on the other hand is another bad idea. I wish Oke would give tinubu the 2008 mimiko treatment.

You sound naive, i'm sorry.Oke obviously can't win this election all by himself even though he is strong politically in the state simply because it will be rigged against him, that is as certain as the rising of the sun. Make no mistake about it bro, the election will be heavily rigged. The guy is smart that is why he is forming the needed alliances to cross the finshline this time around, else his popularity will not save him as he is up against Federal might amongst other forces; even Buhari needed Tinubu for different reasons inspite of his cult following and popularity in 2015 after previous tries. Popularity is not enough to win election in Nigeria.
