The Nigeria national women’s team, Super Falcons, on Sunday evening began their hunt for an astonishing eighth title at the Africa Women Cup of Nations, AWCON 2016. with a massive win against Mali 6 - 0

Arsenal ladies striker, Asisat Oshoala, was the star performer as she netted four goals while the duo of Francisca Ordega and Uchechi Sunday both added a goal each to secure the emphatic win.

The Falcons are new set to face perennial rival Ghana in their second group game

Ghana also recorded a win against Kenya to set up a game against Nigeria

Nigeria's women coach Florence Omagbemi said her side will remain focused on their sole ambition to retain the Africa Women's Cup of Nations title despite Sunday's 6-0 demolition of Mali .

Four goals from Asisat Oshoala plus Francisca Ordega and Uchechi Sunday's strikes ensured the Super Falcons began their title defense on a brilliant note at the Limbe Omnisport Stadium.

And the 41-year-old who captained the country's women side to win four continental titles insists her side will shift focus on giving a better display against Ghana on Wednesday.

"I will say that's the rhyme of the team and a way of getting themselves on top before they start a game," Omagbemi said in a post-match conference.

"We just in the process, this is our first game for the group stage. Our target here is just to take every game as it comes.

"We know we are through with Mali and we are looking at the Ghana team to come up next. Our focus here is just to defend the title we won in 2014. That's all."

Omagbemi will be hoping her side build upon their impressive start when they face the Black Queens who defeated Kenya 3-1 on Sunday.

Cameroun didnt beat us 2-1 in the group stage in 2004. It ended 2-2 and Titilayo Mekuleyi got injured in that game.

She inspired The Falcons to their best (and Africa's best) ever finish at the Fifa women's world cup (Quarter finals @USA 99) and also led the team to Nigeria's and Africa's best Finish ever at the Olympics women football event (Quarter finals @ Athens 2004).

She reigned supreme from 1995-2004.

Nkwocha's journey began at Sydney 2000 Olympics (she wasn't even in the USA 1999 Squad), continued at the 2002 AWCON where she scored 4goals and took it higher at AWCON 2004 where she scored 9 goals followed by 7 goals at AWCON 2006. Four years after that, she banged in a record 11 goals at AWCON 2010.

Both are super legends but Nkwocha smashed Akide's records at the AWCON of 18 goals overall. Nkwocha is on 31 goals overall.

But internationally, I think Akide still leads the goals chat or maybe it's now Nkwocha. The records of our matches outside the Women's WC and AWCON will have to be checked extensively again coz Even Uche Eucharia was another goals machine before Akide came along.

Yeah it's a close call between the two, this is like asking an Argentine.. Between Messi and Maradona, who is the greatest?
So on the world stage and against non African teams Mercy Akide rose to the ocassion more often than perpetual, but still l cannot clearly decide who is greater. It's a draw for me. Mercy Akide at her prime was recognized at the world stage much more than perpetual, but perpetual has done more in Africa.

I aver that our team is miles ahead of Ghana, Cameroun, South Africa.
Equatorial Guinea that would have given us a run for our money are not in the tournament.
