The F2000 is an individual 5.56mm weapon system, developed at the turn of the 21st century by the Belgian armament manufacturer Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Herstal. The F2000 made its debut in March 2001 at the IDEX defense exhibition held in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates.

Design details
The F2000 is a modular weapon system; its principle component is a compact 5.56x45mm NATO-caliber assault rifle configured in a bullpup layout. The F2000 is a selective fire weapon operating from a closed rotary bolt.

The rifle consists of two main assemblies: the barrel receiver group and the frame, joined together with a pin located above the oversized trigger guard. The barrel group has an integral MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny rail used to mount optical sights. The frame or lower receiver contains the trigger group, the bolt and bolt carrier assembly, return mechanism and magazine well. A removable handguard is installed in front of the trigger which completes and encloses the trigger guard.

Lovely looker. . . grin

The FN P90 is a Belgian-designed personal defense weapon (PDW). The weapon's name is an abbreviation of Project 90, which specifies a weapon system of the 1990s.[5] The P90 was originally designed as a compact but powerful firearm for vehicle drivers, operators of crew-served weapons, support personnel, special forces and anti-terrorist units.[4]

Developed between 1986–1987 by FN Herstal, the P90 features a compact bullpup design, ambidextrous grip and a polymer and alloy-based construction. The weapon contains several innovative features including the top-mounted magazine and proprietary 5.7x28mm ammunition, designed for greater penetration of body armour than conventional pistol ammunition.

By 2003, 17,000 P90s were in use by military and police forces[6] in over 25 countries worldwide.[6][7] The PS90 sporting model is also popular among civilian shooters.

Pentagon wants insect-like nano-drones

The U.S. agency responsible for future weapons technology, DARPA, has ordered the creation of an insect-sized flying machine capable of carrying out surveillance. The news was revealed by the project contractor, AeroVironment, in a press-release.

Top generals hope it will lead to a so-called Nano Air Vehicle. The flying machine is to be only 7cm long, weighing just 10g. The device will mimic an ordinary insect.

The James Bond like scheme has already cost the U.S. military more then $2.3 million.

The hand-launched device will be used for security, surveillance, reconnaissance and other indoor and outdoor missions.

The Californian firm is to create a working prototype in half a year.

Anti-ship ballistic missile (ACBM) - The 1st ever anti aircraft carrier missile (call it a game changer) shocked shocked

The US Department of Defense has stated that China is developing a high hypersonic[1] land-based anti-ship ballistic missile based on the DF-21, with a range of up to 3,000 kilometres (1,900 mi).[4][5] These would combine manoeuvrable reentry vehicles (MaRVs) with some kind of terminal guidance system. Such a missile may have been tested in 2005-6, and the launch of the Jianbing-5/YaoGan-1 and Jianbing-6/YaoGan-2 satellites would give the Chinese targeting information from SAR and visual imaging respectively. The upgrades would allow China to employ the missile to destroy US Navy aircraft carriers.[6]

New Concerns Over Chinese 'Carrier-Killer'
April 01, 2009
U.S. Naval Institute

With tensions already rising due to the Chinese navy becoming more aggressive in asserting its territorial claims in the South China Sea, the U.S. Navy seems to have yet another reason to be deeply concerned.

After years of conjecture, details have begun to emerge of a "kill weapon" developed by the Chinese to target and destroy U.S. aircraft carriers.

First posted on a Chinese blog viewed as credible by military analysts and then translated by the naval affairs blog Information Dissemination, a recent report provides a description of an anti-ship ballistic missile (ASBM) that can strike carriers and other U.S. vessels at a range of 2000km.

The range of the modified Dong Feng 21 missile is significant in that it covers the areas that are likely hot zones for future confrontations between U.S. and Chinese surface forces.

The size of the missile enables it to carry a warhead big enough to inflict significant damage on a large vessel, providing the Chinese the capability of destroying a U.S. supercarrier in one strike.

Because the missile employs a complex guidance system, low radar signature and a maneuverability that makes its flight path unpredictable, the odds that it can evade tracking systems to reach its target are increased. It is estimated that the missile can travel at mach 10 and reach its maximum range of 2000km in less than 12 minutes.

Supporting the missile is a network of satellites, radar and unmanned aerial vehicles that can locate U.S. ships and then guide the weapon, enabling it to hit moving targets.

While the ASBM has been a topic of discussion within national defense circles for quite some time, the fact that information is now coming from Chinese sources indicates that the weapon system is operational. The Chinese rarely mention weapons projects unless they are well beyond the test stages.

If operational as is believed, the system marks the first time a ballistic missile has been successfully developed to attack vessels at sea. Ships currently have no defense against a ballistic missile attack.

Along with the Chinese naval build-up, U.S. Navy officials appear to view the development of the anti-ship ballistic missile as a tangible threat.

After spending the last decade placing an emphasis on building a fleet that could operate in shallow waters near coastlines, the U.S. Navy seems to have quickly changed its strategy over the past several months to focus on improving the capabilities of its deep sea fleet and developing anti-ballistic defenses.

As analyst Raymond Pritchett notes in a post on the U.S. Naval Institute blog:

"The Navy's reaction is telling, because it essentially equals a radical change in direction based on information that has created a panic inside the bubble. For a major military service to panic due to a new weapon system, clearly a mission kill weapon system, either suggests the threat is legitimate or the leadership of the Navy is legitimately unqualified. There really aren't many gray spaces in evaluating the reaction by the Navy…the data tends to support the legitimacy of the threat."

In recent years, China has been expanding its navy to presumably better exert itself in disputed maritime regions. A recent show of strength in early March led to a confrontation with an unarmed U.S. ship in international waters.

DONAR autonomous, remotely operated artillery system

Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and General Dynamics European Land Systems (GD ELS) announced a teaming agreement to develop and market a new generation, air deployable, autonomous and remotely operated 155mm artillery system. The two companies are unveiling at Eurosatory 2008 a new self-propelled 155/52 howitzer system utilizing KMW's Autonomous Gun Module (AGM) mounted on the Spanish ASCOD 2 chassis built by GDELS. The team is addressing the growing need for precise indirect fire capabilities to support NATO forces in remote areas of operations, augmenting or even replacing close-air-support operations previously conducted by costly fixed- or rotary-wing aircraft. . .

Sea Shadow
Overview

Sea Shadow is a test craft developed under a combined program by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), the Navy, and Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Company. The Sea Shadow program was begun in the mid-1980s. Its purpose is to explore a variety of new technologies for surface ships, including ship control, structures, automation for reduced manning, seakeeping and signature control. In 1993-1994, the craft was revealed to the public and underwent daylight testing. Since 1994, Sea Shadow has been maintained in a lay-up status and is currently homeported at Naval Station San Diego. In anticipation of conducting future ship research and development testing, the U.S. Navy reactivated the Sea Shadow craft in early 1999. Sea Shadow will support risk reduction for future surface ship platforms such as DD 21, the Navy's 21st Century Land Attack Destroyer. The platform will allow the Navy to explore and test, in a realistic at-sea environment, important DD 21 advanced information and automation technologies that support reduced manning and ship survivability.

The Sukhoi Su-47 Berkut is Russian (top). Russia is a bit behind in the development of new high tech stuff (compared to the US and China); they are mostly modernising cold war stuff.

Russian Stealth Fighter - Sukhoi T-50, 1st flight
Happened yesterday (29 Jan 2010), I'm a few hours late. grin

The Sukhoi PAK FA (Russian: Перспективный Авиационный Комплекс Фронтовой Авиации, Perspektivnyi Aviatsionnyi Kompleks Frontovoi Aviatsy, literally "Prospective (Promising) Aircraft Complex (System) of Front line Aviation", NATO reporting name: Firefox[citation needed]) is a fighter aircraft being developed by Sukhoi OKB for the Russian Air Force.

The current prototype is Sukhoi's T-50[10] and the PAK FA when fully developed is intended to replace the MiG-29 Fulcrum and Su-27 Flanker in the Russian inventory and serve as the basis of the Sukhoi/HAL FGFA project being developed with India.[11][12] A fifth generation jet fighter, it is designed to directly compete with the American F-22 Raptor and American/British F-35 Lightning II. The T-50 performed its first flight January 29, 2010.[13][3].
