Sen. Gbolahan Dada of APC-Ogun West Senatorial District) has advocated capital punishment for corrupt officials in the country.

Dada, who made the suggestion during interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Friday, said “corruption is the bane of this country and the only way out is heavy penalty, even death sentence, for those found guilty.

“The only way you can stop corruption is through death sentence”

Dada noted that there were so many laws that should be promulgated at this stage of Nigeria’s development, pointing out that England did so too at a stage in her life.

He accused civil servants of being the major culprits, pointing out that they had access to public funds which made it easy for them to steal from the national treasury.

“This is why some of them, after stealing so much money from government, set up personal businesses but collapse soon after because they only know how to steal, not to create wealth.

I agree also.
Some would claim that one would see a surge in blackmails but if you you "dey ya lane" and try do do whats right...with evidence of performing such...then who can blackmail/tarnish you.

All these accusations like this person squandered this squandered that, will stop. Everyone would be forced to work with aides, staff or contractors that are not only trustworthy, diligent and thorough but also mind how they interact with other people, both in and out of Government, to avoid getting caught up in any trial of any sort.

The end result is that all these unserious politicians would find other hobbies to partake in, the Government will be like a scared temple and mandates would be efficiently and duly delivered.

The TSA has holes that people can exploit to siphon cash. Imagine a politician moving money with air freight and bullion van with impunity, probably to by-pass such transfer being registered in the Financial Database.
He is further motivated by the fact that, if caught, its just jail time. He comes out at the end of the day feeling like Mandela and with his mounting cash horde waiting for him.

TSA was the first step but Buhari should enforce addition of rapid death penalty to any High level or Low level publc officer holding any office in any agency and being in possession of unaccountable cash. This would address what happens if the money is released. He can then sit back and marvel as how the Government agencies and corporations embark on restructuring (another subtle term for a Purge).
There will also be scape goats which can be used to drive home the seriousness of this clause. A rolling head is enough.

Offices would then be populated with workers and interns who have the actual qualifications and experience to perform that specific job and not just anybody that obtained a Primary School Leaving Certificate

It would be interesting to know which member of the National Assembly voted "Nay" for this inclusion into the Nigerian Constitution. They would probably give one excuse or the other.
A great percentage will have cite BLACKMAIL, HUMAN RIGHTS, LACK OF CONCENTRATION, INCOMPATIBILITY WITH THE CURRENT SYSTEM, SUDDEN EFFICIENCY OF EFCC and their synonyms.
A greater percentage would be stammering or 'blowing' incomprehensible grammer (while sweating profusely on the face or arsē and/or unconsciously clutching his neck) when a Journalist asks about his/her view on the topic of Death Penalty.

Akuko. Is it not when you convict that you sentence or do you sentence before conviction

Even the senator speaking is corrupt. Let us ask him if all the money/wealth he acquired as a senator is legal. Almost all politicians are corrupt, the only difference is how big or small the amount they stole. I partially disagree with him about corruption being the bane of this country, because if you are not well paid, you may be tempted to steal government funds.

I have been to the secretariat on a number of occasion, and sincerely speaking our so called civil servants are not well paid and do not have any reasonable savings. These same civil servants see and hear how their so called ministers, senators and other government functionaries build mansion and buy exotic cars, so how will they not join the party to loot.

Stop mistaking Buhari for the IB who previously occupied that seat. Stealing is now corruption.

Apart from the fact that the death sentence is a flawed punishment - you can't bring a dead man back to life if you later discover that he was actually innocent of the crime - where is the evidence that such draconian measures will be any more effective in Nigeria than elsewhere in the world?

People who suggest measures such as this are speaking from sheer ignorance and a lack of imagination. It's this kind of barbaric thinking that encourages mobs to lynch people on the streets for being accused of petty offenses such as stealing garri.

The proper way to fight corruption in Nigeria is to look at the root causes, and ask what gives people the incentives to engage in corruption in the first place. One major reason is the sheer scale of the opportunities provided - Nigeria has far too many public "servants" who act like lords, useless "officials" who spend their days asking for dash when not telling you "oga no dey", and miserable excuses for "policemen" to busy setting up bribe posts to catch criminals. It's only common sense that if you have a bloated public workforce that is poorly paid, they will abuse their power to squeeze ordinary people for money.

The other major reason why corruption flourishes in Nigeria is that it is too rarely punished. If the odds of punishment are 1 in 1000, then even the death sentence won't stop people from stealing at will, while even a 1 year sentence would do the job if the odds of being caught were 9 in 10. Unfortunately tribalism and political partisanship all too often get in the way of effective prosecution of thieves in this country.
