I am convinced that the data rate increase ordered by Buhari through NCC is deliberately meant to reduce access to internet for ordinary Nigerians so that the influence of social media on Buhari and his co-travellers will be limited.

By my own estimation, at least 50% of internet users will not be able to subscribe regularly as before and at least 20% may stop subscribing entirely for social media purposes.

If these people are cut of from the internet, they will be starved of authentic info and will not be able to post info as fast as before. They will depend on adulterated information coming from the compromised media houses.

Remember that Lai Mohammed had in different occasions in the past complained about the influence of the social media on the image of Buhari's government. Why are they after the same platform they rode to Aso Rock?

They have introduced the data tax through the back door and we are just watching them....Nigerians sorry ooo

This is the reason they want us to believe : NCC says the directive is “in order to provide a level playing field for all operators in the industry [allowing] small operators and new entrants to acquire market share and operate profitably. Small operators and new entrants are hereby exempted for the price floor for data services.”

To clear up any confusion that customers might have concerning this issue, NCC says, “For the avoidance of doubt a small operator is one that has less than 7.5 percent market share and a new entrant is an operator that has operated less than three years in the market.”

What is the NCC driving at? Well, for one, we know that it is trying to protect small operators like Smile, Spectranet and Ntel. Their major USP for entering into the market was 4G LTE data services and now that the big telcos have also joined 4G gang, things are not looking good for them. Also, the NCC issued a much-overlooked caveat when they withdrew the price floor last year. The Commission had stated that it could restore the price floor anytime it observed distortion in the market http://techcabal.com/2016/11/29/nigerians-data-price-hike-this-december/

If my instinct is correct, the reason for this is simple, some people have managed to convince the powers that be that cheap data is why government officials are being annihilated online & not because of their crappy and disheartening outputs...... it's obvious the Telcos are not even in support...

#Occupynaija 2012 was a success & data cost die dat time....

That's all I will say... cool

P.S... Unless evidence is presented to show that NCC is going to get the difference, I stand by my opinion.. chikena.

The op may actually be right.
I have never seen where in a market forces determined economy,a govt body tells an industry to increase prices!
All over other sane climes, policies are implemented to drag down prices for d end consumer.
What makes dis one even more baffling is that Facebook worldwide is about to launch a satellite that intends to crash internet prices because d role of accesible and highly affordable internet in economic and educational development has become indispensable.
Is NCC going to tell FB to jerk up its prices in Nigeria wen it launches?Bunch of fools starting wt that CBN governor killing our economy!!

This government has lost all the goodwill; now, it is fast losing relevance due to dysfunctional construct.

Their intolerance knows no bound. I never thought that we could have it so bad.

Imagine fa. In a recession, they failed to stimulate the economy, failed to finance the budget that would have led to cash injection, and failed to do anything of note at all.

Then power bills got increased, medical bills skyrocketed; a lot of things are not even on the market anymore. Yet, they keep on piling hardship on the citizenry much that it has almost become one week, one trouble.

If my economics knowledge serves me right, to get out of recession, basically, a government either increases its spending to inject more cash into the economy, or cut taxes to reduce the incidence - burden. This government seems to be functioning in reverse gear. They do the opposite of everything.

Nigerians are some of the most law abiding citizens that I know of, but, when pushing comes to shove, they won't realize what hits them.

There's only so much that someone can swallow or tolerate.

Agaba,
Buhari has not hidden his intent to diversify revenue stream. It was part of his message during campaign and before election, it was included in his first speech after swearing in. One of the focused areas for revenue stream is FIRS.

Regulations, whether through NCC or any other agents are designed to observe standards, enforce compliance and derive levies through licensing. An agent body will work in tandem with service operators to address needs necessary to maintain standards.

On the subscriber part, social media is not a need. You do not suffer any loss of quality living if your social media tools are taken away. So it is individual preference and choice to use facebook, use tweeter, use nairaland and other multimedia tools. It is in same grade of utility as owning a car. The government has not blocked accessibility to social media. Everyone that wants to use it can if they will afford the price of using it.

Your input is misguided. What you ought to advocate is a close monitoring of the extra income generated from increased pricing and how it translates into improved coverage, quality and delivery for the consumer. Also, if the FIRS is able to report on the increase in taxed income of service providers and benefit to society.

Consumer advocates collect data at the user input level and use it to influence policies that will shape behaviors of providers. Be a good consumer advocate!

Don't mind the OP though some of the reasons in his write up is valid.

Here is the thing: CDMA Operators (Smile, Spectranet, etc) and GSM operators(MTN, GLO, AIRTEL, etc) had a meeting with NCC last month whereby CDMA operators complained that they are loosing more subscribers base to GSM operators (major players)

What NCC suppose to do is not pegging price at ridiculously high amount because it is obvious at this price, customers and some top GSM operators will be the major looser. I mean this is a competitive market where they suppose to hype their game to attract customers instead of wailing like babies.

These CDMA operators are crooks ripping off customers. How can you sell your router device for a ridiculous amount when the same device can be bought at affordable price in GSM outlets.

It's not as if their network is fast as their 4G is not different from GSM 3G network mode. Just look at Glo 4G with download speed of 6.5MB/sec while theirs hardly achieve 1MB/sec.

NCC on their own are corporate thieves looking for a way to get more money to their pockets hence form alliance with this current incompetent government. They believe Nigerians will adjust because we fail to complain/protest about fuel hike, tax on intl passport, tax on ATM withdrawal, etc. I hope to see us protesting by deliberately not subscribing for data or take to the streets to protest at NCC office nationwide against this wickedness.

There is precedence for this in a way: the inflated cement prices the Nigerian government engineered to allow Dangote enjoy fat profit margins at the expense of Nigerians. This was rationalised as a way of supporting local cement manufacturers but protectionism which provides favoured businesses excess profit margins is self-defeating. In practice, the excess profit is exported abroad as naira earnings are converted to dollars defeating the primary benefit of protectionism; the retention of spending in the domestic economy.

This is how crony capitalism operates: the government bends the rules for favoured businesses whilst imposing high prices on Nigerians. The very opposite of what the government ought to be seeking to accomplish.
