The Senate on Thursday called on the Federal Government to overhaul the National Youth Service Corps Scheme.

The call followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Chief Whip of the Senate, Olusola Adeyeye (APC Central).

The Senate also called on the government to improve on medical facilities in all NYSC orientation camps across the country and deploy experienced medical personnel to the NYSC medical centres.

The Senate therefore mandated its Committee on Sports and Youth Development to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of three corps members in Kano, Bayelsa and Zamfara recently.

Moving the motion, Adeyeye drew the attention of the Senate to the unfortunate death of three corps members, including Miss Ifedolapo Oladepo, from his senatorial district.

He lamented that death of corps members had become a recurrent development in the NYSC orientation camps across the country.

The Senator also expressed deep concern that experienced medical personnel were not in existence in the orientation camps.

He added that inexperienced medical doctors undergoing national service were usually engaged to attend to the medical needs of corps members.

The lawmaker further expressed concern that an orientation camp that housed over 300,000 corps members could not boast of modern facilities to cater for the needs of corps members.

He also decried a situation where NYSC officials were not living up to their responsibilities, adding that the development had exposed the corps members to all manner of dangers.

He said, “The Senate notes with sadness the death of three Corps members: Miss Ifedolapo Amoke Oladepo who died in Kano NYSC Orientation Camp and Miss Elechi Chinyerem, who died in Bayelsa Orientation Camp both on Tuesday, November 29.

“Also, Mr Ukeme died in Zamfara Orientation Camp on Thursday, December 1.

“We are deeply worried that the death of these corps members is becoming a recurrent decimal in almost all NYSC camps across the country.

“We are further concerned that NYSC officials are not up and doing in their official duties as they expose these Corps members to all manner of dangers.”

But wait o, I thought that Zahra Buhari graduated from a University in the UK early this year , Why is she not serving yet? She get extra year? Abi NYSC na for the average and poor.

I feel the program should be reviewed again, It shouldn't be made compulsory.

The money the Government spend on this program isnt worth the hardship people go through. Instead of this , the Governement can make it voluntary and if they dont intend doing that, they should make it a 6 months NYSC and 6 months Skill Acquisition program. Imagine spending 4 - 8 years in higher institution without the necessary skills to survive the real world.

An orientation camp should have atleast 7 qualified medical doctors, not those trial by error corpers

Scrap the damn thing! Every POP in each state, when u check the back of the NYSC magazine for that state u are bound to see not less than 7 fallen heroes. People who died while thinking they are serving to maintain the unity of this corrupt sovereign entity called Nigeria, while in actual fact they are being killed by the yeye scheme called NYSC.

I still maintain NYSC is a waste of 12months in the life of a graduate except for few people who are lucky enough to be posted to PPA's where they are retained and given gainful employment.

In fact am furious that all in the name of NYSC graduates have to go tru rubbish processes. Imagine forcing graduates posted to states with harsh weather like sokoto,niger,kebbi, kano etc and being forced to match from 4 to 6 in the evening when the sun is deadly? huh? I nearly passed the way of the deceased Ifedolapo while in camp due to the way the whole NYSC was structeured. The soldiers wouldn't even care if u are someone who is not built for physical activities of that level...... An the yeye doctors always think u come to the clinic to escape match past.......smh.

At the end of the whole NYSC service scam year, those who benefit are

1. The Host community where teach or work in whatever capacity
2. The bank that slashes N300 out of N19,800 as bank charges
3. The local government inspector or Zonal inspector that arranges with ghost corpers

I don't see why nysc should be scrapped. Rather the facilities and services should be improved

People die everyday. Some have died through road accidents. Does that mean all roads and cars should be removed?

Let the government provide adequate facilities for them. Especially areas with harsh conditions and the scheme would be perfect

Add up the total money expected to be collected by a corper in a year...pay graduates this sum as soon as they graduate from school and see how things ll change..

It's appropriate to give thanks when you survive NYSC year cos the things corpers dey see, hmmmm. I won't forget the girl that died in my set, went to sleep in the night and never woke up.

People say it fosters national unity, but if you take a statistics of the average comment on Nairaland alone, you will ask yourself which unity?

If they can't make it better, let them scrap it. Enough youthful blood has been wasted already.

I thought this medical doctors (corps members) pass through housemanship before going for service. so why should they be inexperienced.

Instead of scrapping NYSC, why can't it be used for something more productive? Sending corpers to teach is a big fail. Education is very important and there are corpers with 3rd class. What are they going to teach? How about sending all youth corpers to the farm? Do you know the bumper harvest we will get every year? Just my 2 cents.
