Emmanuel Adebayor Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor is a professional footballer. He was born in Lome, Togo, a West African nation on the Gulf of Guinea on February 26, 1984 by Nigerian parents from the Yoruba ethnicity. EARLY LIFE The soccer star has dual nationality – Nigeria and Togo by naturalization. However, he spent his childhood in Kdjoviakope, a neighborhood of Lomé, bounded by the Route Circulaire and the Togo-Ghana border before leaving the African country in pursuit of his football career. ADEBAYOR’S FAMILY Adebayor’s father hails from little village called Igbaye in ‘OdoOtin local government area of Osun, while their mother is from a neighboring town called Ekusa. Emmanuel has three brothers and two sisters, but is closet to one of his sisters, Iyabo. His younger brother’s name is Rotimi Adebayor. He father, Shedrack Adebayor Adeyi died in 2005, leaving behind his mother, Hajia Adebayor. RELIGION In a controversial move that many still struggle to understand, Emmanuel Adebayor officially renounced Christ accepted Allah and the Islamic religion on Sunday the 5th of July 2015. The conversion ceremony held in his adoptive home country of Togo. The many attempts to understand what motivated him has proved abortive especially since he attributed the miracle of his walking at the age of 4 to the church. MARRIAGE The Togolese professional footballer is married. He has a daughter named Kendra (who was born in June 2010). FOOTBALL CAREER Emmanuel Adebayor started his football career at the age of 11 at the Centre de Developpement Sportif (CDS), also known as Sporting Club de Lomé – a popular football training school back then. In 1991, he was spotted in Sweden by Metz coach, Francis De Taddeo during a youth tournament and was subsequently brought to France. On November 17, 2001, he made his Ligue 1 debut against FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. He also played a season in Ligue 2, where he scored 13 goals in 34 leagues matches. During his two seasons in Metz, Emmanuel Adebayor was voted best player in the second division. In 2003, he moved to Monaco after his former club Metz got relegated. His stay in Monaco was however not so rosy as he only managed to score 18 goals in 61 league starts. Adebayor featured only nine times in the club and was an unused substitute in the match that towered them to 2004 Champions League final, having played against Jose Mourinho’s Porto in Gelsenkirchen. On 13 January 2006, he was signed by for a reported £3. Adebayor made his debut for in a Premier League match at Birmingham City on 4 February 2006, scored after 21 minutes. On 22 September, he scored his first hat-trick for Arsenal in a 5–0 home win against Derby County. Adebayor signed a five-year contract with Manchester United on 18 July 2009, for a transfer fee of £25million. On his debut with the red devils, he scored a goal against Blackburn Rovers in the third minute of the game. Two years later, Adebayor signed a loan deal to play for Real Madrid for the remaining season. His first goal for the club came in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final against Sevilla. He later joined Tottenham Hotspur on 25 August 2011 on a loan. On his debut in September 2011, he scored against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the 67th minute. On 26 January 2016, Emmanuel Adebayor, signed a six-month deal with Crystal Palace INTERNATIONAL CAREER The soccer star was one of the brains behind Togo’s qualification of 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, having scored 11 goals in the qualifiers. Position Emmanuel Adebayor is a center-forward striker. AWARDS Adebayor was picked by CAF for the 2008 African Football of the Year on 10 February 2009 at an awards ceremony held in Lagos, Nigeria. He was the first Togolese to win the African Football of the Year, beating Egypt’s nominee Mohamed Aboutrika and Ghana’s football star Michael Essien in a vote that involved the national team coaches of CAF’s 54 member- nations. THE ADEBAYOR FAMILY CRISIS The scuffle between the Adebayors started in November 2014 after the striker sent his mother and sister out of his mansion in Accra, accusing them of witchcraft and using charms on him. Emmanuel Adebayor told All Sports that he will never talk to his mother who he alleged was behind his poor performance in his career at that time. In response, Adebayor’s elder brother slammed the footballer for branding their mother a witch. He rather accused Emmanuel of being brainwashed by Muslim alfas, who prophesied when he scores goals and why he is not playing well. Extended family members who weighed into the case also called for peace and warned the soccer star to stop washing the family’s dirty linen in public. They then called on the Adebayors to give attention to their family house in Igbaye, Osun state, Nigeria. The scruffy house was built by Emmanuel’s late father while he was living in Ghana.
