Understanding Pain and Pleasure

By Olaoluwa Akande

In the pursuit of life and gait toward greatness, how you interpret pain and pleasure is of utmost importance. Your values, beliefs, priorities, the actions you take, the things you indulge in are built upon these two words.

What does pain and pleasure mean?

Pain in this regard is not the feelings derived from physical injuries or dangers. It is that emotional or mental distress experienced when you are striving to achieve your goals.

On the other hand, pleasure is a feeling of happy satisfaction and enjoyment.

“Pain comes before pleasure.”

It is very demeaning when people do not want to face any challenge or difficulty before they can be great. When you are aiming to achieve some things, substantial sacrifices must be made. There will be a time of no money, resources and even people to stand by you, but you still have to keep going.

Almost every great man in the world has passed through one kind of pain. The likes of Abraham Lincoln, William James, and William Sherman battled with depression. So also, Steve Jobs, Henry Ford, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein and many more turned their downfalls into success.

As a student, those sleepless nights are not in vain. As an upcoming artiste, those critics are not to be taken personal...

The emotional distress you have experienced or still experiencing will be a landmark to success. “All the things you have gone through are neither good nor bad based on your interpretation”. When pain is faced and conquered, leads to joy, happiness, excitement etc.

As a person you must make stringent long term decisions to achieving your priorities. Therefore, through prayer, commitment, sacrifices, perseverance, focus and dedication you will achieve those set goals.
