Tension In Uniport As Militants Protest. by DeGuru1(m): 4:57pm On Nov 20, 2009
The ex-militant kept at Aluu ,a nearby village to the University of Portharcourt and a village mainly occupied by students, ran into rancour and pandemonium through a very danderous protest from the militants. The ex-militants said that they ran out of patient after their allowances was not paid to them. They also complained of poor living condition at the camp,in what they describe as governmental negligence, insincerity and abandonment.
Meanwhile before this protest, the students at Aluu have been complaining of incessant robbery attacks on them ,which they had suspected the ex-militants or their allies to be responsible.
During the protest, goods and property worth millions of naira were either stolen or destroyed, people wounded and over four(4) girls striped naked on the school road and raped right there while it was also reported that about four other girls were seized to their camp.
Many has queried the university management over what their described as unwelcomed and a result of negligence."If not why did the school for the first instance allowed the rehabilitation camp to be located closer to the university, considering the security threat and negeative impacts that this will have on these youths at school" an interverwee queried.
In a total rejection of the development and keeping to the ALUTA SPIRIT of "injury to one, injury to all" alive, the university Student Union Goverment president Comrade Amadi Solomon led other angry students to the Rivers State government house to file their grievances. One of the things they demanded was the immediate relocation of the camp from any location closer to the school or best located at the government house or Aso rock.In response, the Rivers state commissioner of commerce who received the students on behalf of the Governor urged them to be peaceful and law abiding as the government will look into the events rightly.
Meanwhile, academic activities at the university has been paralysed due the incidence. The chapter president of ASUU,Dr. Andrew Afemini said that academic activities cannot continue in a place where their peace is threathened and vowed that it shall continue to be so until the camp was removed totally from the school environment.
