The Nigerian Senate has temporarily put a hold on the ban on the importation of used vehicles into the country through land borders.

The decision was taken at the Senate plenary on Wednesday, January 11, to allow a grace of three months for those whose vehicles were affected by the earlier January 1, 2017, deadline. The New Telegraph reports.

Recall that the federal government had last year announced the ban on the importation of used vehicles, popularly known as ‘tokunbo’, through land borders.

The implementation, through the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) was to become effective on January 1, 2017.

However, a grace of three months was granted for those who must have placed their orders to complete the clearing process.

Many car dealers had their vehicles stuck at borders as Customs kick off land import ban on January 1, 2017.

The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) had kicked off the implementation of the banning of vehicle importation through land borders on January 1 and the Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Seme Chapter is reported that many vehicles were trapped at the borders due to the implementation of the policy.
