Recently, the Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure to Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola, Engineer Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson, was in Agege and Ifako Local Government areas of the state.

The inspection kicked off at Ogba where the Lagos State government is constructing a Magistrate Court complex. Facilities in the main building include a parking space on the ground floor, lifts, courtrooms, staircases, courtyards, conference rooms, library exhibit lift, offices and conveniences. There is also a ramp for the physically challenged as well as a withholding cell. Work commenced on the project in January 2008 and the expected date of completion is April 2009.
The inspection team was also at the Gorge Treatment at Yaya Abatan Road in Ifako Ijaiye. Engineer Johnson said the gorge is 23 metres deep and has eroded severally and now threatens the Yaya Abatan carriageway. This, he said, prompted the state government to award the contract.

Johnson said the project was progressing satisfactorily and hinted that eight metres of the gorge have also been reclaimed to increase the width of the road to 20 metres at the gorge section.
Work is also nearing completion at the 100-bed maternal and child care complex at the General Hospital in Ifako Ijaiye. The Lagos State government says the project will reduce infant and maternal mortality rates in the state.

Engineer Johnson and his team also inspected the on-going rehabilitation of Oniwaya Road in Agege. The project was awarded in March 2007 as a priority project to enhance commercial and social activities. The road, when completed, will link Afanla and Awosoga among other communities.

Humuani/Adetona Street in Agege area is another road under construction by the state government. The pavement of the work has been completed and it will be a bypass to Abeokuta Road.
Two residents of the area, Mr. Eddy Benson, a dentist and Sullaiman Danlami, who spoke on behalf of the Hausa community lauded the government’s gesture, saying the road was impassable, owing to potholes and craters.

The construction of Balogun Street (Phase II) in Orile Agege will soon be completed. The Community Development Association (CDA) Chairman in the area, Mr. Samuel Doherty who appreciated the state government for the gesture urged the residents to be faithful in the payment of their taxes, so that more developmental projects will come to the community.

The contractor handling the construction of Mancity Olaniyi Road –Phase II, assured Engineer Johnson that the project would be completed by March 2010. The road will link Abule Egba, Jankara, Ijaiye, Akinde and Toll Gate. Mr. Emmanuel Adeosun, the CDA Chairman said: “We thought the road would not be done in the next 10 years but Governor Fashola is doing it now.”

Other road projects inspected by the Special Adviser are Sanni Balogun Street, Ilupeju/Jibowu Estate Road, Beckley Estate Phase I, Alakuko in Abule Egba and Akinde.
Deputy Director of Bulletine Construction Company, Otunba Lekan Osifeso, promised that the Beckley Estate Phase I and Akinde would be completed in March 2010.

Engineer Johnson said Alakuko Road was constructed in 2001 but was later destroyed by flood. This, he said, prompted the state government to redesign the road. The construction firm, CONSTENG Limited, promised to hand over the project by the end of February 2010.
In his overall assessment after the inspection, Engineer Johnson, said: “Most of the projects are really behind schedule but I will score the building project very high. We have done well on the road projects but not as expected. So, I will score the road project above average.

“This year, unfortunately, we experienced unprecedented rain, especially in October and November. That has really slowed down the progress of work. Even with that, I want to assure you that we’ll not compromise on quality. We have advised the contractors that they should double their workforce, so that they will be able to meet the schedule by the end of March 2010.

“We have projects going on at Orile, Coker, Ajeromi, Ifelodun and other areas of the state. The administration of Governor Babatunde Fashola is executing various projects all over Lagos State. It is either a road project is going on or a school or hospital is being constructed. Each resident of the state must benefit from the state government.”
