Since independence, the Nigerian mockingbird has been dealt deathblows and none worse than during this present age. For most people who do not know about the mockingbird, it is a symbol of innocence. Killing the mockingbird is killing innocence.

Some might ask how it is so. It’s quite simple. Innocence represents the youth, the future of a nation, which must be safeguarded at all costs. Sadly, the youths have always had to withstand the worst of all decisions taken by those who are supposed to secure their future, and guide them.

Recently, a video of a boy who wanted to become a “yahoo yahoo” went viral; he wanted to “sha se” a slang known to mean ‘dupe whites’.

Of course, it’s a reflection of the society the boy lives in, but he got an endorsement deal.That’s right, an endorsement deal for wanting to become a criminal.

It’s funny that some people are “keying into his testimony” and claiming God has answered the boy’s call. Like really?

At independence, the likes of Azikiwe, Gowon, and Obasanjo were aged 59, 32 and 39 respectively when they led the country and they killed the mockingbirds of their generations. Today those we have as leaders show the scarcity of mockingbirds.

Sadly, the mockingbirds of this age are not innocent and have no need for values that define a country. Today’s mockingbirds can be found on twitter or instagram, begging celebrities for money, trading insults over ethnicity or religion, reacting to gossips etc.

Looking ahead, one can be frustrated about the dire state of the country and wondering if there is hope for the unborn generation. This is because the future is the present, which was our past and is threatening to uproot the very fabrics of this nation.

This is just noise. We've passed that stage now. All there are in positions of power are rulers and theives. Nigeria will collapse under the enormity of her numerous problems very soon. Lies, deceit and greed do not build a society.
