Solar batteries have become more costly no thanks to the exchange rate yet they remain the only sustainable solution to erratic power supply. Fuel landing cost recently hit N145 so the government is obviously subsidizing. With the current situation in the country govt may not subsidize for long. So how do you buy an expensive battery and not have it last for a very long time? It ought to. If you know the reasons why your solar battery didnt last long you would have prevented it.

Below are the top reasons why solar batteries fail:

1. Full or near Full discharge:

Every solar battery has a number of cycles it can go. A cycle is simply charge and discharge. The depth to which you discharge your battery and charge them up affect this cycle. So if you have a battery with 1600cycles at 50% depth of discharge and 1900 cycles at 30% depth of discharge. The man who discharge only to about 30% will have his battery last longer. Heavy depth of discharge leads to sulfation of the battery. A sulfated battery is a dead battery.

To simplify this grammar. Dont discharge your battery to the extent they go dead or about to go dead before recharging. This explains why batteries that are charged only from inverters dont last long.

2. Charging with petrol generators.

Batteries require stable frequency to effectively charge well. Most of these petrol generators dont have stable frequecny. This can easily be proven by getting an incandescent bulb. Power it from the generator and watch how it flickers visibly in the eye. Actually every bulb is flickering when put on but at stable 50hz the human would not notice. So if you able to notice a flicker it simply means the frequency of your gen is not stable. Charging batteries with this gen leads to sulfation. A bigger diesel generator however may charge batteries well if not faulty.

3. Over Charging and heat

Over charging batteries or heat causes the battery plates to break down or distort making them to come in contact the result of which makes a 12v battery become 10v. When this happens the battery has suffered sulfation.

This is very informative, thank you. Quite a number of inverter users rely on petrol generators to charge. And in most cases, due to lack of power from the grid and economic conditions, the batteries are left to discharge to great depths. This article will help inverter users be more cautious.

I have a 1000VA Mercury inverter and a 100AH battery.
I want to add solar panel to it. What solar panel capacity would you recommend and what is the cost. Thanks.

A 200w-250w solar panel will do the trick. Mono or poly but then it is the load you will power on it that matters more. Call this number 08170846589 for further enquires.
