Keys to successful Mentoring
Re: Are You Seeking For A Mentor To Guide You? Tips For Talents And Mentors by hakeemgp: 10:54am On Jan 25, 2017
Key #1: Develop a Relationship of Trust: Develop a relationship of trust. Relationships need to be built before any effective mentoring can take place. An environment of trust and mutuality must be established. It is important for the mentor and mentee to become acquainted with each other (Kutilek & Earnest, 2001; Mincemoyer & Thomson, 1998). Begin each relationship with a getting-to-know-you session. The mentor should greet the Talent warmly and help the mentee identify his or her professional needs and goals. The mentor should learn about the Talent's educational background and experience, and share information about his or her own background and experience. The mentor can then continue to build upon the mentees strengths, needs, and goals throughout the mentoring period. #talentsandmentors

Key #2: Define Roles and Responsibilities: Clearly define the roles and responsibilities of both the mentor and the mentee. Typically, a mentee is more receptive to feedback if he or she feels like an active participant in the relationship (Mincemoyer & Thomson, 1998). Questions to consider include: What will the role of the Mentor be? What types of mentoring will be most effective? What are the responsibilities of the Talent and Mentor? For example, the Talent may be required to attend specific training given by the Mentor or complete a certain number of mutually determined goals during the mentoring period. #talentsandmentors

Our mentors come from every walk of life, age group and type of organisation. They belong to different age groups with the majority at the peak of their careers. Our target is to ensure every profession and job category is represented. The only qualification required is being able to put a young Talent first.

Mentors listen without judgement. They empower, build aspiration and are a gateway to an expanding menu of opportunities including education and employment. Education is key to unlocking our young Talent's potential. By volunteering to provide Mentorship, you guide a young Talent onto a positive pathway. You’ll also have the opportunity to develop your own skills and expertise. Empathising with the challenges the young Talent faces and positively influencing them to focus on discovering success.

Helping young Talents achieve this is a hugely rewarding experience.

If You Want to Struggle Less, Get a Mentor!

I have come to realize that many people struggle in life because they lack mentors. Many successful people often credit their success to the role a mentor played in their life. Mentors are people who can inspire you to succeed by the shear feats they themselves have accomplished. They often make a good guide, counselor, teacher, supporter and adviser because they have been where you aspire to be.

Truth is, there is hardly anything you want to achieve that somebody somewhere has not already accomplished. Like the saying goes, “there is nothing really new under the sun”, and as Bertrand Russell said, “the very best proof that something can be done is that someone has done it.” The only challenge therefore will be how to discover who has done what you are trying to achieve and how they did it. Seek them out and have them mentor you. We all need a helping hand, and truly successful people are often willing to lend a helping hand (not necessarily by dolling out their money).

The question is, “are you positioned for someone to find you attractive enough to mentor?” My advice…. seek out a mentor or two today; let their lives educate you and allow their successes to inspire you. Speak with them as often as you can; ask them how they did it, and what they think about your own dreams and ideas. In no time, you’ll find yourself making less mistakes, losing less time & resources and accomplishing more.
