DELSU MATRICULATION CEREMONY 2016/17

Delsu matriculation ceremony was held at the three campuses simultaneously on Saturday 21ST January 2017.

At the convocation/matriculation ground at Abraka Campus 3, which was uncharacteristically not filled to the brim this year. Empty seats at the venue, could be as a result of the economic recession in the country.

The Total number of students Admitted for bachelor’s degree was 6,045 while that of Diploma was 230 students out of 17844 students who sat for the Post UTME (Some years back, Delsu used to have about 45,000 Post UTME applicants).

As always the VC did gave a speech.  Here are some of the things the VC said at the ceremony;

About the matriculation ceremony and oath taking here is what he said “matriculation ceremony is a universal academic tradition and requirement in higher institutions. Oath taking is an initiation into intellectual community because it confers on you the full right of students".

On academics he emphasised the need to be diligent and honest saying “while you are here as student you need to be diligent in your academic work and be honest in the pursuit of your dream in the institution”.

On Rules and Regulations in the university, he urged the matriculating students “to obey all rules and regulations during the short period of your studentship, refrain from all activities that inimical to the growth of intellectualism”

About violence, hard drugs and other social vices, thehe VC came down hard saying “I want to warn that the university take serious exception to issues that border on discipline and lawlessness particularly when such action involves violence and breach of peace. Indecent dressing, drug addiction, sexual harassment, campus prostitution and any kind of action that come under broad classification of breach of matriculation oath”.

When it was time to talk on the barbaric tradition of baptism by the old students, he sounded a note of warning saying that “the old students to desist from these barbaric attitudes. The matriculating student should resist such nefarious actions and report to the appropriate authorities if such situation occurs” we all know how that one ended.

Speaking on social media, he said that students shouldn’t become captive of it.

The VC made a promise to the parents that the university would deliver “Quality education and uninterrupted academic session” saying that his desire for the matriculating students is that they would leave the university with their dream fulfilled.

Lastly he spoke about the university being one of the fourth generation universities in Nigeria (what he meant by that? I don’t know) and has grown from a modest beginning back in 1992, to a citadel of research and learning.

From all of us here at campusthree we are wishing the matriculating students a lovely and prosperous stay in the university.
