It is not news that the situation of Nigeria has become critical to a point there are fears that the troubles experienced might take quite some time to be solved, hence leading to very great losses.

The recession which has been termed the worst in Nigeria’s history, tends to be bringing out the worst in many Nigerians.

One major yardstick to measure the level of debasement to which the economic situation has brought Nigerians down to, is the gross increase in sex workers within the Lagos metropolis.
A walk around the very popular redlight districts, one is shocked to see the number of ladies that are now into the sex trade, some as a full time business, while for some others, it is an avenue to make up for what their day time jobs could not give them.

One would believe that the business is really booming, hence the influx of girls into the trade, however, this is not the case.

The economic crisis which is rocking the nation, tends to have bitten into the pockets of those who patronize the ladies.

One Tina told our reporter that the business is not thriving as it used to, “things have gotten hard and prices are fast changing, we try to change our own price to soothe situations but market still no dey.”

The price for shame

Tina did not spare any detail, she went on to narrate how prices have so fallen, giving an analysis of how feeding has become difficult that some would stoop so low for the price of a “derica of rice” (N300).

She revealed that in some quarters where N500 would have been the lowest price for the girls, many would not mind if a N300 offer is thrown at them. She further revealed that for anything above N500, the girls would go out of their ways, no holding back.
Rice as a yardstick

For those who understand feeding in Nigeria, Rice is a major meal and to a great extent signifies so much including wealth and class. According to Tina, when at the various chalets were the girls take shelter, one cannot get to fix a proper rice meal, then it is understood that things have become critical.

With prices skyrocketing on a daily basis, rice and other food stuffs have become too high for the girls to buy. According to Tina, because of the drought experienced in the trade, feeding is a big problem and as such, some of the girls are falling sick and cannot “hustle” again.
From year to year, the debate over prostitution as a legal way of making money in Nigeria has continued and Like Tina, many ladies who ply this trade are of the opinion that the government should make it legal, especially as there are no provisions for many of them who are illustrates.

For quite a while there have been motions raised on the floors of the Nigeria Legislative Houses, for and against legalizing the trade. Though without approval, the trade still thrives especially in mega cities like Lagos.
Every once in a while the police goes around to sweep some of the girls off the streets, however, the girls get to bail themselves either in cash or in kind, Tine reports.

She says even in the very hard times like the nation is experiencing, the police still continues to arrest and collect whatever they can get.

About a year ago, more than 500 commercial sex workers rallied in Abuja, demanding to legalize their trade in wake of recent police raids, when more than 3,000 prostitutes were arrested.

The prostitutes gathered under the slogans “Legalize prostitution now” and “Allow us to hustle for our daily bread”, protesting discrimination and harassment from male law enforcement representatives.
