In recent times the cost of transportation has significantly gone up.There are loads of lamentations going on here and there ,but we just can’t do without transportation .Here are seven ways we can spend less on transportation .

Buy Your Own Car
While this is debatable, depending on the constant route you ply and some other factors. In the long run it kind of pays later .You would be saved from hikes by Danfo drivers.

Buy A Bicycle
Yeah I said it ,buy a bicycle .For those short and medium range distances .It would not hurt to go on a bicycle.Just make sure you put on protective gear and ride safely .

Understand Danfo Timing
Depending on the kind of area you are boarding a Danfo from, the time of the day has a role to play in cost of transportation.

For example if you stay in Oshodi , and you want to go towards Abule Egba-Sango its cheaper in the morning from around 6am-1pm ,because people hardly go towards that area in the morning , but are moving away towards Oshodi, Ikeja etc.So the transportation cost is cheaper.

So understand the timing in that area with respect to the cost .

Find Out The Quickest Route
Asking around about the quickest route to your location would help save a lot .Also find a straight bus ,and not splitting the journey .

For example ,when I want to go to Yaba from Dopemu I used to take , Oshodi to Onipanu to Yaba(#100 + #50 + #50).I later figured out there is a straight bus for just #150.

Avoid Okada If You Can
You really don’t have to take okada all the time .Alternatively tricycles (Maruwa) are comparatively cheaper and safer when available.

Take The Water Ways
If you are unlike me and you are not shaken by the sight of large body of water ,then the water ways is a good option when available .Its comparatively cheaper,no traffic and safer if you use a life jacket.

Do Some Trekking
As a popular slang goes ,Leg it !! .Your legedis benz is there for a reason. For considerably short distances , that wont take more than 20 minutes , it won’t do much harm if you take a walk .It would save you money and doctors say its good for your health.

Have a thing or two to add ?,hit me with comments .

Dear Op

I disagree with some of your points above.

Buying your own car is definitely not a way of spending less on transport in lagos {if you painstakingly do the maths considering many inherent Lagos-factors you'd realize what I mean} taking cognizance of the cost of fuel and cost of maintenance. With Danfo drivers to contend with on roads, you have the high tendency of having to spend much of your hard-earned money on body work or replacement of parts.

Also, no matter how sane, smart or compliant a driver you're, you'd have to occasionally helplessly shell out money to Law enforcers in Lagos, e. g LASTMA, VIO, FRSC, POLICE, LOCAL GOVT TOUTS [if you park in a wrong place, you have your vehicle towed by them whereby you'd even have to be begging them with your money while they turn you down insisting on particular amount] and the list goes on. These are inevitable as a Lagos Driver. Also the wear and tear on the car especially if you're staying in places like Adiyan, Agbado crossing and many places with pot-holes size of a valley. Factor this in and tell me how much you spend as a driver in lagos vis-a-vis a commuter. I've had my fair share in all these, so also an average car owner in Lagos. This of course doesn't mean having your own car isn't better off jumping Danfos, but to me, it's not a life-saver against economizing resources .

Sure way I expected you to embolden is BRT. That shiii saving body and soul since 1905.

OP, what of light rail?
Why did you leave that out?
Meanwhile, your suggestion of ferry, bicycle and trekking is quite nice.

Is there any functional light rail system in Lagos?? shocked Or are you referring to the mass transit rail contraptions run by NRC from Iddo to Ikeja, that lack a well-organised schedule?

Yes, o!! I agree with this one 100%. I used to go by road from Lagos Island to Apapa, only to suffer the torture of sitting through the stressful gridlock on the bridge and inner roads of Apapa, caused by tankers and danfo drivers.

The day I discovered that ferries shuttle from CMS/Marina to Apapa, I did a thanksgiving in church! Ever since then, I have always taken the ferry. No traffic, short travel time (i.e. about 15 mins), pure unadulterated breeze, few delays etc. I only wish the jetty at the Flour Mills end in Apapa could be upgraded, modernised and made safer and cleaner for all users. cheesy

Taking the speed boats from Maroko end in Victoria Island to Ikoyi, are also a good way to commute. But you would need to wear safety jackets or vests, during your trip. undecided

We suppose have light rail since 1983 when Jakande started building one that Buhari cancelled after jailing him.
Since then the APC people of Tinubu, Fashola and Ambode have been trying without success.

Blue3k:
I posted topic about it. Got same shill comments your recieving from apologist.

9 years, 1 billion dollars and 4 missed deadlines later. They budgeted more money for the projet but haven't announced new completion date.

16km out of 27km complete for blue line only. Then for red and blue priority projects is only 58km. Total for mass rail is 246km.

Ps we're talking about blue line being fully operational only. Not the whole mass Transit system. The project started 2008 when contract was awarded to Chinese firm.

I am glad you used the word "suppose," which shows that the light rail does not yet exist. I am not interested in numbers or what has been budgeted or spent. I am only interested in realistic options which are readily available for the use of the masses, to alleviate their transportation problems. sad
